Student Intern, Public Works
The Town of Needham is seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill the position of Student Intern within the Administration division of the Department of Public Works. This temporary role will work directly with the members of the team to learn records management and digitization fundamentals, billing workflows, and gain exposure to municipal software systems.
This internship is designed to offer a balance of structured tasks and independent project work, helping the intern build confidence, professional skills, and practical experience relevant to public sector careers.
This internship is temporary, through August 30, 2025.
Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8 am-5 pm, Tuesday 8 am-6 pm, Friday 8 am-12:30 pm

Duties and Responsibilities
These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:
- Gain foundational understanding of the Accounts Payable (AP) process through invoice tracking and logging entries.
- Support in importing data into online systems, ensuring data accuracy and consistency between platforms.
- Learn records management process for paper files, labelling and cataloging files for improved accessibility.
- Digitize historical records, ensuring file naming conventions and organization are consistent.
- Assist in cataloging and storing images for marketing of projects and for use in future publications.
- Understand Municipal Operations through cross-training and exposure to various departmental functions.
- May support on long-term projects as time permits
Requirements
The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
- Student with courses in Governmental Studies, Finance, or an interest in municipal government
- Attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks and duties
- Prior experience with Microsoft Office Suite is desired
