Education & Community Engagement Intern

In partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture, POP is seeking an intern for our Education & Community Engagement Department. The position includes delivering opera and music education programming to children and adults in Los Angeles. 

The successful candidate will have experience working on-site with children, a passion for the arts and arts education, flexibility, and a positive attitude.

The Education & Community Engagement Intern will report directly to the Director of Education & Community Engagement. This is a short-term contracted position (approximately 15 hours a week) from June 2025 - March 2026. Hours could increase as needed and approved by the Department Director.

 

Responsibilities

  • Educate K-12 youth members on opera and performing arts through POP's curricula (training will be provided)
  • Promote the values of art and music, by energetically leading youth art activities on opera, classical music, arts & crafts, production, and more
  • Evaluate POP curricula through structured feedback, and adapt activities and lesson plans to fit different students' learning levels
  • Assist the Director of Education & Community Engagement and Youth Program Instructor with job tasks
  • Support staff at POP Engagement Events within Los Angeles County
  • Support POP staff at opera productions (this task may include evening and weekend work hours)
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Maintain a positive attitude when interacting with POP staff, POP artists, school and youth center leaders, and the community
  • Maintain a teaching schedule and a system of reliability
  • Be punctual and have the ability to commute to a variety of schools and youth centers throughout Los Angeles independently
  • Follow safety policies and protocols, as enforced by POP, venues, schools, and county and federal agencies
  • Spanish language preferred, but not required

 

Qualifications

  • A passion for working with children, and helping them foster creativity
  • A passion for music, performing arts, opera, and/or music education
  • A belief that art should be accessible to, and inclusive of, all community members, including historically marginalized groups
  • Be self-sufficient and have the ability to perform tasks without supervision
  • Obtain the willingness to learn new skills
  • Be punctual and reliable
  • Be flexible, and have the ability to easily adapt to different work schedules and locations (Examples: schools, theaters, recreation centers, working remotely, etc. As a condition of this internship, POP will work to accommodate your school and employment schedule.)
  • Be enrolled in at least one college course at the time of application

 

Salary:  $17.87/hour. This is a short term position, at approximately 15 hours per week, until 400 total hours are accrued.
