Position Title: Affordable Housing Policy & Data Intern
Location: Madison, Wisconsin; La Crosse, Wisconsin; or remote
Duration: Summer 2025 & Fall 2025
Commitment: Part-time up to 10 hours per week
Compensation: Paid, $12/hour
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented intern with a passion for affordable housing policy, data analysis, and legislative advocacy. This internship offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of data-driven research and policy reform, providing tangible insights to support housing affordability initiatives. The intern will contribute to developing policy recommendations and engage directly with legislative offices to drive meaningful change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect, process, and analyze housing-related datasets to identify trends, disparities, and opportunities for policy intervention.
- Develop policy briefs, reports, and presentations that translate data findings into actionable recommendations for alliance leadership and policymakers.
- Track and summarize local, state, and federal housing policies, including legislative proposals and their potential impacts.
- Assist in drafting memos, testimony, and advocacy materials to support legislative efforts.
- Develop monthly legislative updates for alliance members.
- Engage with legislative offices, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to present research findings and policy proposals.
- Monitor housing market trends, rental affordability indices, and demographic shifts affecting housing accessibility.
- Attend and contribute to meetings, hearings, and policy discussions related to affordable housing.
Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in Public Policy, Economics, Urban Planning, Data Science, Political Science, or a related field. Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students are encouraged to apply.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, with experience in statistical analysis and data visualization preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data into accessible reports.
- Knowledge of affordable housing policies, zoning laws, or government programs such as LIHTC, Section 8, or rent control is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
