Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rodgers is offering a paid internship for assistance with research and
publicity related to her duties as the State Poet. The ideal intern will be comfortable with a
combination of working independently and collaboratively, and will have the opportunity to
gain experience in working with the arts and culture sector, the media, and the general public.
The intern will work remotely much of the time, with guidance and supervision from Jewel.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Destination Research:
- Identify and compile information on key destinations across Nebraska relevant
to a statewide poetry initiative.
- Highlight locations with unique cultural, historical, or literary significance.
- Connect with key contacts of these locations to schedule appearances, readings,
and/or workshops, etc.
2. Publicity and Outreach:
- Draft compelling press releases, letters, and articles to share project updates
with local media outlets.
- Build a list of media contacts, focusing on Nebraska-based publications, and
explore opportunities with 1-2 national sources.
3. Marketing Assistance:
- Suggest/research effective ways to engage rural communities
Additional Responsibilities:
Given your capacity and growth, the role will expand into scheduling, email and phone
communication with potential clients, and creative direction for print and spoken word
projects. The above are core functions, but do not fully encompass how your role may evolve
from now through March 2026.
At all points of your internship, your creative input is welcome. Jewel always encourages ideas
and is transparent when and why they may or may not align with my vision. She prefers that
her intern will have a genuine interest in connecting with people.
