ABOUT THE 12TH SUFFOLK DISTRICT

The 12th Suffolk District includes parts of Mattapan, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Roslindale, and Milton. This district is home to a vibrant mix of cultures, languages, and community institutions. Representative Brandy Fluker-Reid is deeply committed to equity, transparency, and delivering results for all residents through legislative advocacy and community-driven solutions.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of Representative Brandy Fluker-Reid seeks a Legislative Aide to manage internal operations, lead the office’s communications strategy, and provide critical legislative support.

This role is ideal for a strong writer, organized project manager, and creative thinker who is looking to deepen their experience in public policy, state government, and strategic communications. While policy development will initially be led by the District Director, the Legislative Aide will support that work through research, tracking, and internal coordination. The position also includes managing the office’s digital communications and occasional support with external engagement.

The Legislative Aide is based at the Massachusetts State House and reports directly to the Representative.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Legislative & Administrative Support

●      Track legislation and committee activity related to the Representative’s areas of interest.

●      Draft testimony, letters of support, memos, and briefing documents as needed.
Manage the Representative’s schedule and day-to-day office functions.

●      Attend legislative briefings, analyze complex policy issues, and use sound political judgment and critical thinking to advise the Representative.
Coordinate with the District Director and Representative on policy research and internal timelines.

Communications & Digital Strategy

●      Serve as the primary communications lead for the office.

●      Manage the office’s social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, Threads, LinkedIn), ensuring a consistent voice and engaging presence.

●      Draft and distribute written materials that highlight the Representative’s work, including newsletters, constituent updates, website content, press statements, etc.

●      Create content for digital and print communications using tools like Wix, Canva,and Brevo.

●      Monitor press, legislative updates, and news coverage relevant to the Representative’s priorities.

Supportive Community Engagement

●      Occasionally attend community meetings or virtual forums to observe and report back key takeaways.

●      Support event preparation, logistics, and briefings when the Representative attends district events.

●      Assist with constituent services on a limited basis, in coordination with other staff.

 

Qualifications

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong candidates will:

●      Have excellent writing and editing skills across formats (e.g., social posts, memos, newsletters).

●      Be organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.

●      Demonstrate experience with or interest in government, public policy, or advocacy.

●      Be comfortable creating and managing digital content and using design tools such as Canva.

●      Have experience with communication tools such as Brevo and Wix (or be willing to learn quickly).

●      Bring a collaborative, professional, and proactive mindset to their work.

●      Be ready to learn how a legislative office works and use strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to support the team.

●      Exhibit discretion, political judgment, and cultural humility.

Bonus (not required):

●      Prior experience in public policy, communications, government, or journalism.

●      Bilingual or multilingual skills—especially in French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, Portuguese or Cape Verdean Creole.

●      Familiarity with the Massachusetts legislative process.
 

 

COMPENSATION & COMMITMENT

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position based at the Massachusetts State House. Compensation aligns with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts guidelines for legislative staff and is commensurate with experience. Some evenings and occasional weekends may be required based on the legislative calendar or public events.
