Marine Finfish Aquaculture - Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program

Location:             Carlsbad, CA

Duration:             8-week commitment of 30 hours each week;

June - August preferred (negotiable)

Compensation:    $5,000 stipend available

Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) is a non-profit marine science research organization that conducts research related to its mission of promoting ocean conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources. Founded in 1963, HSWRI operatestwo research facilities in California: one in San Diego's Mission Bay and the other in Carlsbad, in addition to a facility in Melbourne Beach, Florida. The Institute's research covers a wide range of topics, including marine mammal behavior, physiology, and health, as well as the development of innovative aquaculture techniques for cultivating marineplants and animals.HSWRI's research also focuses on the study of oceanographic processes and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. The goal of HSWRI's research is to inform policy decisions and promote sustainable management of the ocean's resources. HSWRI provides educational opportunities and internships to students and researchers seeking to gain hands-on experience in marine science and conservation.

Job Summary

Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) is offering an internship opportunity for individuals interested in aquaculture research. We are seeking motivated interns to participate in hands-on research aimed at advancing marine finfish husbandry practices. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, interns will engage in projects focused on evaluating rearing and welfare conditions in our hatchery in support of California’s Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program (OREHP). Tasks of this Internship Include:

  • Participating in various projectsto assess systemperformance and fish handling techniques in the hatchery.
  • Conducting hands-onevaluations of rearingand welfare conditions for marine finfish.
  • Assisting in the development of best practicesfor marine finfishhusbandry based on research findings.

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of this internship encompass a diverse range of hands-on tasks essential for the optimal husbandry of marine finfish. Interns will actively engage in the daily care routines of broodstock and larval fish, including feeding, water quality monitoring, and tank maintenance. Regular assessments of system performance and water quality parameters will be conducted, with interns recording detailed observations and measurements to support ongoingresearch projects. The intern will interact with the site hatchery manager daily and have weekly meetings to discuss ongoing projects, track progress on projects,and address any needs. Successful applicants will have strong communication skills, be able to work independently and in a team environment, and be committed to the mission of HSWRI.

 

Skills/Knowledge/Ability/Experience or Education

Required

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a currentstudent at an accredited collegeor university or hold an associate or bachelor’s degree.
  • Must submita short letterof interest describing your previous experience and how this internship aligns with student’s career goals
  • Must submita resume of courses and/orexperience related to position applying for, or unofficial transcript
  • Daily activities will vary but will include both outdoor and indoor environments that can be wet and damp, with moderate noise levels.
  • Project task assignments may include weekendsand holidays as assigned.
  • Support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment where all staff, volunteers and guests are respected and valued.

Desired

  • Extensive coursework or a degreein the biological sciences (or related field).
  • Basic understanding of chemistry, and experience workingwith animals.
  • Strong interestin and awareness of animal husbandry and marine science/ecology
  • Able to team lift up to 50 pounds with accommodations.
  • Ability to multitask and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Officeapplications, including Word,Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
