Job Description: Animation Teaching Artist

 

Utah Film Center is seeking a diverse, energetic, dedicated, and passionate animator to join our team of Teaching Artists, within the Media Education Department, for the 2025-2026 academic school year. Utah Film Center’s Media Education programs introduce K-12 students to the power of animation as a learning resource, storytelling method, and prospective career. Teaching Artists work to improve students’ media literacy skills through classroom workshops, film screenings, and hands-on activities designed to increase student creativity, comprehension, and critical thinking skills, while supporting Utah’s core curriculum requirements for arts education. 

 

The primary method of delivery for our Media Education programs will be in-person at Utah’s schools and public libraries, along with occasional “live-virtual” workshops via Zoom.

 

Note: This is a contractor position. We are seeking Utah professionals for this position. Applicants are not required to be located in Salt Lake Valley, but must have reliable transportation.

Through our programs we frequently explore the role of storytelling, cinema, art, and artists in confronting key social issues of our time, combining and juxtaposing local and global perspectives. Position Type: Independent Contractor, Non-Benefited

Schedule: Part-time, up to 20 hours per week, August 2025 - May 2026


 

Compensation: $50 per contract hour, including required meetings and training conducted by UTFC. Teaching Artists receive a monthly reimbursement for mileage traveled, based on the standard mileage rate set by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). 


 

Closing Date: This position is open until filled through the 2025-2026 academic year. 

 

Teaching Disciplines:

Teaching Artists are filmmaking professionals, with industry insight, who are able to teach K-12 students effectively in one or more of the following film disciplines:



 

  • Animation
  • Stop Motion
  • Character Design 
  • Digital Lighting 
  • Storyboarding
  • Rigging 



 

 

Primary Responsibilities


 

  • Design and develop engaging, interactive workshops that give a comprehensive, age-appropriate “Behind-The-Scenes look” at your craft, with practical “How-To instruction” on one or more of the disciplines listed above, with support from Utah Film Center’s Media Education Department.
  • Present 60-minute workshops, in-person and “live virtual” via Zoom, to students in grades K-12, with the ability to modify content based on the grade and age level. A majority of workshops take place in elementary and middle school classrooms.
  • Develop pre- and post-workshop materials & activities for teachers to continue the lesson after the workshop, in collaboration with Utah Film Center’s Media Education Department. 
  • Monday-Friday availability beginning September 2, 2025, to May 29, 2026, for facilitation of workshops, particularly between 8 AM - 4 PM MT. Teaching Artist schedules will be created based on availability between these dates and times and the number of workshops booked by Utah teachers. 
  • Record and report hours worked, miles traveled, and other essential data points.


 

Qualifications


 

  • Industry experience in the field of film, media, and/or media production. 
  • Experience with live instruction and/or training with K-12 learners is strongly preferred. 
  • Ability to develop engaging and interactive learning experiences is strongly preferred. 
  • Ability to travel independently to a variety of Utah schools, within a predetermined service area.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • A positive, self-motivated, adaptable, innovative personality that is willing to work in a dynamic, fast-paced mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrates a passion for film and media arts education for changing hearts and minds.
