Assistant Farm Coordinator - Yaphank, NY

This position will serve as the Assistant Farm Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Suffolk County and will support the administrative and operational coordination and management of the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center. Under the direction and oversight of the Farm Crops Manager/Farm Coordinator, this position is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Suffolk County Farm and its associated agricultural enterprises and assisting with planning, executing, and coordinating ongoing farm tasks, including, but not limited to facilities management, equipment repair; crop management; manure management; pest management and recordkeeping. This position will assist with agricultural facilities and land maintenance for production demonstrations, research, and education.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree plus experience relevant to the role of the position.  High School diploma/GED plus 1-year transferable program/functional experience may substitute.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards (DMV and criminal background checks).
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including, but not limited to, moving, and transporting fifty (50) pound bags of feed and bales of hay.
  • Ability to climb into the squeeze chute and over fences.
  • General gate and fencing repair knowledge.
  • Ability to show initiative and be a self-starter to complete general maintenance projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual means.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate and train staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member collaborating with staff.
  • Ability to perform routine landscape maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, planting, and irrigation to keep grounds aesthetically pleasing and functional.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate farm equipment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience utilizing agricultural and environmental management practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in farming and livestock.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the forage and field crop operation successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize standard computer technologies.
  • Proficiency in basic carpentry tasks.
  • Familiarity with custodial responsibilities, including cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining facilities to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform minor mechanical and maintenance repairs on vehicles and farm equipment.

 

POSITION DETAILS:

Salary:            $22 per hour

Schedule:      NONEXEMPT – Regular; 40 hours
