Summer Manufacturing Internship

Summer Manufacturing Internship
Day Shift | 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM | Detroit, MI

About Kirlin Lighting:
Founded in 1895, Kirlin Lighting is the longest-operating independent lighting manufacturer in the U.S. We design and build high-performance lighting for hospitals, operating rooms, MRI suites, and government facilities—all from our headquarters in Detroit. Our products are engineered and assembled in-house, offering an unmatched opportunity to see how precision manufacturing and engineering come together in real-time.

About the Role:
This full-time, paid summer internship is ideal for students pursuing degrees in mechanical engineering, industrial design, manufacturing technology, or related fields who want to get hands-on experience in a real-world shop environment. You’ll work side-by-side with seasoned operators and engineers to build real parts used in high-performance lighting systems.

You'll gain experience in:

  • Operating machinery such as presses, drill presses, band saws, and press brakes
  • Reading and working from technical drawings
  • Applying shop math and measurement techniques (calipers, micrometers, etc.)
  • Participating in lean manufacturing practices (5S, continuous improvement)
  • Logging jobs and understanding ERP systems
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams from engineering, assembly, and quality

What We're Looking For:

  • Curious, hands-on learners who want to understand how things are made
  • Mechanically inclined with an interest in tools, machines, and fabrication
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in quality work
  • Reliability and a positive attitude—someone who shows up and contributes
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive tasks safely

Why This Experience Matters:
Whether you’re considering a career in product design, manufacturing, or engineering, this internship gives you direct exposure to the full product lifecycle—from raw material to finished part. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of design-for-manufacturability, industrial operations, and what it takes to build mission-critical products.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Pay: $15/hour
  • On-the-job training and mentoring from experienced team members
  • Opportunity to return for future internships or full-time roles

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Overtime opportunities available
