Seasonal Summer Staff

Job Posting: Seasonal Summer Staff 

Organization: The Friends of the Rye Nature Center 

Location: 873 Boston Post Rd, Rye, NY 10580 

Reports To: Land Steward and Director of Conservation 

Status: Seasonal, part-time – Monday- Friday 9:30am-3:30pm (approximately 30 hours per week). To start in June and end in August. Start and end dates are negotiable. 

About Rye Nature Center 

Friends of Rye Nature Center (FRNC) is an independent nonprofit who manages the Rye Nature Center. The Rye Nature Center is a 47-acre wildlife preserve in the heart of Rye, NY. The preserve features a diverse array of habitats, including oak and pine barrens, granite outcrops, ponds, floodplain forest, and over two miles of hiking trails. FRNC’s programs encourage the protection of our natural resources and promote environmental awareness in Rye and the surrounding communities. Position Summary: 

The Friends of Rye Nature Center is seeking enthusiastic and hardworking individuals to join our team as Seasonal Summer Staff. This is a fantastic opportunity for those who enjoy working outdoors, are passionate about nature, and want to contribute to the upkeep and enjoyment of our urban green space. Seasonal Summer Park Workers will assist with a variety of tasks related to park maintenance, visitor support, and program assistance. 

Responsibilities: 

Park Maintenance: Assist with general park upkeep, trail maintenance, and ensuring the park is clean and presentable for visitors. 

Groundskeeping: Assist with basic ecological tasks such as invasive plant removal, watering of restoration plantings, lawn mowing, and deer damage maintenance. 

Garden Maintenance: Help care for native plant and food gardens alongside the horticulturalist.  

Visitor Support: Provide friendly and helpful information to park visitors, answer questions, and direct them to facilities and points of interest. 

Trail Monitoring: Walk and monitor park trails to ensure they are safe and accessible, reporting any issues or hazards to supervisors. 

Light Maintenance Tasks: Assist with minor repairs to park infrastructure (e.g., benches, signs) as directed. 

Tool and Equipment Care: Assist with the basic cleaning and organization of tools and equipment. 

Safety: Follow all safety guidelines and report any safety concerns to supervisors. 

Other Duties: Assist with other tasks as needed to support the overall operation of the park. 

Qualifications: 

Some previous knowledge of invasive plants 

Must be at least 16 years old. 

A positive attitude and strong work ethic. 

Ability to follow instructions and work independently and as part of a team. 

Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions for long periods of time. 

Comfortable working in conditions with ticks and mosquitoes. 

Good communication and interpersonal skills. 

A genuine interest in nature and the environment is a plus. 

Reliability and punctuality are essential. 

Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds or more occasionally. 

 

 

Compensation: 

Hourly rate: $16:50
