Childcare Center Director

Position Title: Childcare Center Director
Reports To: Board of Directors
Supervises: Teaching Staff, Assistant Teachers, Office Manager, Kitchen Staff, and Janitorial Staff
Hours: Minimum 20 hours/week (Preferred: 32–40 hours/week)

Position Summary

Berlin Community Daycare is a nonprofit early childhood center seeking a dedicated, organized Center Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of the center. This position plays a vital role in ensuring high-quality care, strong leadership, regulatory compliance, and community engagement. The Director supports staff, families, and the Board while promoting a safe, nurturing environment for children from infancy through school age.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Development, or a related field

Completion of required training under DCF 251.05(3)(e)3.d prior to start date

Knowledge of federal and state daycare licensing regulations

Strong leadership and communication skills

Business and budgeting knowledge relevant to center operations

Experience with staff supervision, training, and evaluation

Ability to handle conflict resolution and parent/staff communication effectively

Familiarity with child development principles, curriculum planning, and classroom support

Preferred Skills & Characteristics

Experience working in a nonprofit, education, or licensed childcare leadership role

At least 240 hours of experience as a teacher in a licensed childcare center or approved setting

Ability to navigate regulatory compliance and reporting requirements

Understanding of early childhood behavioral support and parent engagement

Comfort with community outreach, public relations, and stakeholder communication

Confident decision-maker with initiative and a collaborative leadership style

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

Provide direction and support to staff and oversee daily center functions

Ensure center environment is inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with state standards

Develop and maintain children’s weekly attendance schedules

Monitor curriculum and instructional methods to meet the developmental needs of all children

Human Resources & Staff Development

Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all staff in accordance with legal requirements

Facilitate staff meetings and promote a positive, collaborative work environment

Maintain accurate and compliant personnel records

Track and support continuing education requirements for all staff

Finance & Administration

Create tuition invoices and oversee direct deposit transactions

Monitor budget, approve purchases, and collaborate with the Board on annual budgeting

Prepare and maintain financial and operational reports

Seek and submit grant proposals when applicable

Board & Community Engagement

Serve as liaison between staff and the Board of Directors

Plan and lead monthly Board meetings, including agendas and minutes

Represent the center to parents, community groups, and outside agencies

Ensure the center’s website and social media are current and reflect center values

Compliance & Program Oversight

Maintain compliance with DCF 251 and other state/local regulations

Develop and revise center policies, handbooks, and staff agreements

Support classroom instruction and behavior guidance when needed

Address parent concerns and lead resolution of behavioral issues

Collaborate with outside agencies and inspectors as required

Additional Duties

Support coverage in classrooms during staff absences

Participate in center events such as fundraisers, family nights, etc.

Promote a warm, professional environment for families and staff alike

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 lbs

Extended periods of sitting, walking, bending, squatting, and kneeling

Sufficient vision, hearing, and sensory input to ensure child safety and supervision
