Social Media Marketing Intern

Position Overview

The Social Media Marketing Intern will assist VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads (VHR)  in the creation and implementation of the organization’s marketing plan- focusing on digital communications. 
 

This is a paid internship for someone looking to gain experience in digital marketing within a large network of nonprofit organizations. This internship can be completed for college/university credit.
 

VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads is flexible on scheduling, and hours/week to accommodate the candidate’s needs. 

 

Compensation

$16-$18/hr

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a social media marketing plan to promote volunteer opportunities, nonprofit impact, and upcoming events and programs.
  • Create engaging content for social media, blog posts, and email newsletters using Canva, Adobe, and scheduling tools.
  • Collaborate with nonprofit partners to gather stories and highlight community needs.
  • Track social media analytics to measure engagement and adjust content strategy as needed.
  • Attend networking events and nonprofit activities with VHR staff to gain industry insights and strengthen community connections.
     

Qualifications and Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or certificate program related to marketing, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Experience or coursework in digital marketing, content creation, or social media management preferred.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling stories.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe) and social media platforms preferred. 
  • Interest in the nonprofit sector and a passion for community engagement.

Internship Requirements

  • Internship will be required to begin no later than June 14, 2025, and end no later than August 16, 2025. 
  • Internship will be 20-30 hours per week with a maximum total of 240 hours. 
  • At least two full days per week will be required to be in office with a third day each week being spent off site at volunteer or networking events in the Hampton Roads area. 

 

What You Will Gain

  • Graphic Design & Content Creation – The intern will develop skills in designing eye-catching marketing materials using Canva and Adobe, creating social media graphics, blog visuals, and email newsletter content tailored for nonprofit audiences.
  • Social Media Strategy & Analytics – Intern will learn how to schedule posts, analyze engagement metrics, and adjust content strategies using social media management tools. This will help them understand audience behavior and improve campaign performance.
  • Nonprofit Storytelling & Communications – By engaging directly with nonprofit partners, the intern will learn how to interview stakeholders, write compelling stories, and craft messaging that connects volunteers with meaningful opportunities in the community.
  • Networking & Professional Development - Intern will attend nonprofit sector and young professional networking events. Through a grant with Atlantic Union Bank, interns will attend four virtual learning sessions and an external professional development opportunity.

 

Organization Culture

VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads consists of a small, but mighty team of four. This is an opportunity for an individual desiring exposure in either the nonprofit or for-profit side of community impact making. While focused primarily on social media marketing, this internship will touch organization programming, community outreach efforts, membership retention, fundraising, and more. Our intern will be given the freedom to implement and test new ideas, participate in staff meetings and brainstorming sessions.
 

VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads has a network of several hundred nonprofit and corporate members to which the selected intern will also have exposure. Our intern will also have access to the network of member companies connected to our two affiliates,  the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and the Points of Light Global Network.
