Public Relations Intern
SUMMARY
Discover The Palm Beaches, the official tourism marketing organization for Palm Beach County, is seeking a paid intern to assist the Public Relations team. This unique opportunity offers students real-world training to learn what it takes to effectively promote America’s First Resort Destination® through a wide range of hands-on projects, valuable networking and educational opportunities within the industry.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Public Relations department will offer an internship position to a qualified individual/student seeking an employment and/or learning opportunity in the Public Relations or Travel/Hospitality industry. The internship length will be up to 12 weeks, with the option to extend for additional time as agreed upon by the intern and the employer. This position will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour, with a maximum of 24 hours a week, excluding unpaid 30-minute lunch breaks. Hours can be completed in full days or half days as previously determined by the employer’s needs and the intern’s availability. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS and EXPECTATIONS
This position will be exposed to the many facets of Public Relations, including writing, budget and performance reporting, and media relations, including pitch development and itinerary creation. Further, a strong knowledge of the tourism industry and assets available throughout The Palm Beaches will also be fostered.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Update and draft basic public relations materials such as fact sheets, backgrounders, media briefing documents, media alerts, partner communications, itinerary descriptions in Travefy, status reports and other materials as directed (30%)
- Support monthly performance reporting (5%)
- Conduct research to support media lists, editorial calendars, media pitching and key initiatives (15%)
- Coordinate itineraries for visiting journalists, from preparation to post follow-up. (5%)
- Assist with updates to the online pressroom and other administrative duties as assigned (15%)
- Assist in event planning and execution (5%)
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and departmental meetings (25%)
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
- Candidate must be enrolled in college or a university program. The desired candidate will be motivated, results-oriented and well organized. This person should have an innate willingness to learn and the ability to establish and shift priorities in a dynamic environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Hospitality, or related field
- Strong desire for hands-on learning in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with knowledge of AP Style preferred
- Excellent computer literacy with experience using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook
- Ability to think creatively and analytically
- Attention to detail and organization
- Adept to working on deadlines and balancing multiple projects
- Team player with a positive cooperative attitude
- Self-motivated, self-starter able to work independently
