Graduate Policy Internship – First Focus on Children

About Us:
First Focus on Children is a bipartisan advocacy organization committed to making children the priority in federal policy and budget decisions. With deep expertise across the full range of issues that affect the lives of more than 70 million children in the U.S., we develop and promote practical, bipartisan solutions to improve child well-being. Our sister organization, First Focus Campaign for Children, leads our direct advocacy efforts with policymakers.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a graduate-level intern to support our federal policy and advocacy work on behalf of children. This internship provides an opportunity to gain substantive experience at the intersection of policy, research, and advocacy. Interns will work closely with senior policy staff on projects related to health, education, poverty, immigration, child welfare, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth policy research and analysis on key issues impacting children and families
- Draft and edit policy briefs, reports, fact sheets, blog posts, and other advocacy materials
- Track federal legislation, budget proposals, and regulatory changes relevant to child well-being
- Attend (virtually or in-person) and summarize Congressional hearings, briefings, and coalition meetings
- Assist in the development of advocacy strategies and contribute to strategic policy campaigns
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on cross-sectoral issues
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program (e.g., MPP, MPH, MSW, MEd, MA in Public Affairs, or related)
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
- Demonstrated commitment to improving outcomes for children and families
- Familiarity with the federal legislative process and public policy landscape
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple tasks
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
Details:
- Internship may be part-time or full-time depending on the semester and student availability
- This is primarily an unpaid internship; however, we are happy to support academic credit, external fellowship funding, and may offer limited paid opportunities for qualified candidates
- Remote or hybrid options available (based in Washington, D.C.)
