Policy Internship – First Focus on Children

About Us:
First Focus on Children is a bipartisan advocacy organization working to make children the priority in federal policy and budget decisions. With policy experts across the many areas that impact the lives of more than 70 million children in the U.S., we advance practical, bipartisan solutions to ensure the well-being of children at home and around the world. Our sister organization, First Focus Campaign for Children, carries out direct advocacy efforts to support our mission.
Position Summary:
First Focus on Children is seeking passionate and policy-driven undergraduate interns to support our work on federal children’s policy. Interns will gain hands-on experience in research, advocacy, and communications while working alongside experienced policy professionals. This internship is ideal for students interested in public policy, child advocacy, social justice, or a future in law, government, or nonprofit work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct policy research on issues such as child poverty, education, healthcare, immigration, and family well-being
- Track and summarize federal legislation and regulatory activity impacting children
- Assist in preparing policy briefs, fact sheets, blog posts, and advocacy materials
- Attend and report on Congressional briefings, hearings, and coalition meetings (virtual or in-person)
- Provide general support to the policy team and assist with special projects
Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate student, preferably with a major in public policy, political science, sociology, public health, education, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated interest in children’s policy, advocacy, or social justice
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about learning
Details:
- Internship may be part-time or full-time depending on student availability and semester
- This is primarily an unpaid internship; however, we are happy to support academic credit, external fellowship funding, and may offer limited paid opportunities for qualified candidates
- Remote or hybrid options available (based in Washington, D.C.)
