Legal Internship

Legal Internship – First Focus on Children
Washington, D.C. | Remote Eligible | Summer/Fall/Spring Semester

About Us:
First Focus on Children is a bipartisan advocacy organization dedicated to making children the priority in federal policy and budget decisions. With experts across a broad range of child-related policy areas, we work to advance practical, bipartisan solutions that improve the lives and well-being of more than 70 million children in the United States and children around the world. Our sister organization, First Focus Campaign for Children, supports our advocacy through direct lobbying efforts.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate Legal Intern to support the legal and policy work of our organization. The intern will work closely with the legal and policy teams on issues that impact child welfare, health, education, immigration, and family economics, among others. This is an excellent opportunity for law students who are interested in public policy, legislative advocacy, and children's rights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal research and analysis on federal policies affecting children
  • Assist in drafting memoranda, policy briefs, comment letters, and other legal documents
  • Monitor legislation and regulatory developments related to children’s issues
  • Support the development of advocacy strategies through legal and policy analysis
  • Attend and summarize Congressional hearings, briefings, and coalition meetings (virtual or in-person)
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary policy teams on cross-cutting issues

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an accredited law school (1L, 2L, or 3L)
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated interest in children’s rights, public policy, or social justice
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Commitment to nonpartisan, bipartisan advocacy and evidence-based policy

Details:

  • Internship may be part-time or full-time depending on availability
  • This is primarily an unpaid internship; however, we are happy to support academic credit, external fellowship funding, and may offer limited paid opportunities for qualified candidates
  • Remote or hybrid options available, based in Washington, D.C.
