Summer Camp Intern

Detroit PAL is a non-profit organization with the mission of Helping Youth find their Greatness. The organization is positively impacting the lives of 8,500 youth each year through athletic and enrichment programs. PAL also empowers the community by training 1,000 volunteers and coaches, by creating safe places for kids to play, and by running quality programs that keep young people healthy and active. Detroit PAL's home office is located at the Old Tiger Stadium on Michigan near Trumbull, which is a hub of programming excellence for youth in and around Detroit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as leaders and mentors to summer camp participants. 
  • Foster a fun and safe environment for campers and fellow staff.
  • Attend and support camp activities and field trips.
  • Serve breakfast and lunch, and maintain drinking water stations.
  • Aid in camp setup and breakdown.

The best Internship experience occurs when the intern fully engages in PAL operations! Accordingly, we will provide opportunities for engagement through specific projects/responsibilities, which will be provided below:

 

Specific Projects/Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and facilitate group games, sports, and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) activities.
  • Participate in 15-18 hours of training which consists of preparation for summer camp and First Aid training.

 

Critical Events/Dates that Will Need Your Assistance /Support:

 

  • Mandatory training will be June 24th through June 26th, 2025, 3-5 hours on the 24th and 25th, 6 hours on the 26th.
  • The camp parent meeting will be June 25th in the evening. Camp staff are asked to attend.
  • Workdays of Summer Camp:
    • July 7th - July 11th
    • July 14th - July 18th
    • July 28th - August 1st
    • August 4th - August 8th
  • There is no camp July 21st through July 25th, but all staff will report on July 23rd for a 3 hour debrief and preparation session. 

 

Weekly Hour Commitment:

 

  • 3-5 days a week, 4-8 hours a day

Optimal Start Week:

  • June 24th

Optimal End Week:

  • August 8th

General Internship Objectives

  • Understand the goals and objectives of Detroit PAL and the projects being conducted by program and administration staff.
  • Gain a better understanding of the uniqueness of running youth development programs in an urban environment.
  • Develop an understanding of the programmatic process from development to execution to evaluation
  • Learn more about non-profits and program management
  • Develop an understanding of how programs and fundraising work together at a non-profit
