Legislative and Grassroots Advocacy Internship

The Kidney Cancer Association is seeking a passionate and motivated Advocacy Intern to join our team. This role provides a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in the nonprofit sector, focusing on both legislative and grassroots advocacy, all while contributing to the battle against kidney cancer. The Advocacy Intern will work closely with the Patients Programs team, Communications team, and others across the organization as needed. This is a remote position suitable for a candidate that is motivated, organized, independent, and communicates regularly. and will be supervised by the KCA Patient Programs team, led by our Director of Patient Programs. 

 

 

Duties may include:

  • Research and Analysis: Assist with researching current policies, legislation, and healthcare issues important to the kidney cancer community at the federal and state level. Compile data and provide insights for advocacy strategies and engagement.
  • Grassroots Advocacy: Help organize virtual events to mobilize the kidney cancer community, including patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals 
  • Communication: Draft and edit advocacy materials such as fact sheets, social media content, newsletters, and press releases, with direction from the Communications team.
  • Collaboration: Work with team members, including Communications, Research, Patient Programs, and KCA’s Patient & Caregiver Advisory Council, to align advocacy initiatives with broader organizational goals.
  • Other projects as assigned (or proposed by you!)

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate school student majoring in public policy, public health, or nonprofit management
  • Interest in legislative and grassroots advocacy
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong research and writing skills 
  • A creative mind who isn’t afraid to share their ideas
  • Familiarity with social media platforms
  • Able to efficiently balance multiple projects

 

Internship details 

  • Flexible schedule, a minimum commitment of 10 hours/week 
  • Ability to meet for 1-hour each week for an afternoon check-in
  • Length of internship: Fall 2025 semester (September-early December), can continue in Spring 2026 if both parties would like to continue
  • This opportunity is unpaid, but can be used to meet college credit requirements
