Director of Communications

Essential Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership. This work may include, but is not limited to:

Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of the organization and strengthen the International Institute's brand identity across key stakeholder audiences.

Create a communications strategy that will allow the executive and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, public officials and key influencers.

Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the sector and organization. Work with the board and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

Act as an essential member of the management Act as an effective liaison between Leadership and staff. Keep Leadership appropriately apprised of operations and communicate any problems or issues in a timely manner. Seek to mitigate and resolve problems.


 

Communications Operations. This work may include, but is not limited to:

Oversee and implement an annual editorial calendar across various print and digital platforms, such as the organization's website, external email communications, annual reports and social media.

Oversee the maintenance of the International Institute website with clear and current information, ensuring ease of navigation and clarity.

Serve as a spokesperson and respond to members of the media in a timely manner, compose and distribute press releases as needed, and pitch stories that support the organization's goals and strategies.

Develop and maintains positive professional relationships with various members of the media.

Support the Development Team with messaging and webpage design for intermittent and annual donor appeals.

Assist executive leadership in developing presentations, speeches, and other important corporate messages.

Develop, implement, and adhere to communications budget.

Develop, compose, distribute, and implement polices to enhance the efficiency of the communications department and to further develop building and maintaining a positive brand.


 

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.

3-7 years of experience in public relations, including supervisory and comprehensive marketing experience required.


 

Knowledge, Skills, & Ability Requirements:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proven experience in developing and implementing organizational communications strategies.

Superior ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for corporate and external publications.

Proficiency in creative design programs, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.

Established understanding of web design, including basic UI and SEO principles.

Thorough understanding of social and traditional media analytics, in order to make informed decisions.

Proven experience as program director or other managerial position.

Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods.

Outstanding knowledge of data analysis, reporting and budgeting.

Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and program management software.

A business acumen with a strategic ability.

Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities.

Commitment to excellence and high standards.

Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels.

Demonstrates sensitivity to the service population's cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

Relevant community outreach or organizing experience.

Demonstrated ability to plan and organize projects.

Ability to offer sound media relations advice to senior leadership.

Ability to work with corporate management, employees, media, and the larger community.

Ability to coordinate efforts of various teams in order to present a coherent message.
