Stagedoor Manor is seeking Hair & Make Up/Counselor to join our team for the 2025 Summer Season.

Stagedoor Manor is a Theater Summer Camp-the premier summertime training ground for young performers ages 10 to 18 from all over the world. Located in the Catskill Mountains of New York, Stagedoor Manor is housed in a former summer resort.  For over 49 years, passionate young performers have come to us to learn more about their art, and themselves while making lifelong friends along the way. Each camper is cast in one of 14 productions that take place each session in addition they take classes in any number of theatrical subjects. Outside of theatre the campers make lasting memories with activities such as Cast vs Cast Volleyball, Movie nights, DJ dances, and Talent shows just to name a few.

We at Stagedoor Manor are committed to all levels of talent and experience. Students are admitted (without auditions) on a first come/first serve basis.  Our primary purpose is to create an enriching summer atmosphere where young people can learn and grow through the fun of theater.  “Process, rather than product” is the Stagedoor mantra.   Education is our mission, and community is our goal.

We will say this many times: Counselors are the backbone of Stagedoor. Without having a caretaker for our campers, we would not have such a successful program. This experience will strengthen your resume, enrich your portfolio, and foster your artistic and caretaking growth in a lively and encouraging atmosphere. If you are interested in joining this amazing team please read the job description below.

Hair and Make Up / Counselor Job Description

During the first two weeks of each session, make-up artists will teach classes assigned by the Director of Education, with the assistance of the make-up team leader (TL), using your skills, experience, and background as a foundation for the campers' assignments. Make-up artists will also work closely with the make-up TL and the other members of the make-up team in coordinating with the show directors and costume designers as to the make-up needs for each show. In the third week of the session, make-up artists will be scheduled to apply the more difficult and specialty make-up for the shows and supervise the campers who apply their own basic stage make-up.

But first and foremost, you are a counselor. You are like an older sibling to our campers. As a counselor, you are the caretaker of a group of campers. It is your responsibility to not only wake them up in the morning and be sure they are all there at bedtime, but also to check in with them during the day. Does one of your campers seem sad? Did you notice all the roommates were sitting together at lunch or was one of them missing? You are not alone! We have group leaders and returning counselors and lots of staff to help if you see a problem or have a worry. Counselors in our assigned male dorm typically watch over 8 campers and counselors in our assigned female dorm watch over about 6.

Typical Counselor  duties include (but are not limited to):

Meal Duty- Meal Duty consists of several possible roles in the  dining hall, from attendance, walking to dining hall,  hot water duty, etc…allowing for adequate supervision of camper dining times.

Grounds: Assigned location around campus to observe campers during rec or free times.

Attendance: Working with a Group Leader to ensure class attendance is taken for each class period of the day.

Prep Time: Time allotted on your schedule for your Hair and Make up needs.

Evening Rec: Each night there is a planned evening Recreation administered by the Group Leaders and Counselors. Those assigned will help facilitate that evenings rec.

Floor Duty- During rehearsals and classes, we have a counselor sit on each floor to ensure that no one is skipping a class, no one comes back upset, etc.

Other duties include: Lobby, entry, mail, canteen, etc.

All counselors have a 1:00am curfew.

During Session Changeover (the 24-hour period between when one group of kids goes home and another group arrives), it is the counselors that vacuum and dust the rooms, decorate the halls and generally clean up in anticipation of the next group of kids.

The hours are long. Some days you get up at 8:00am and not find your bed again until 1:00am. There is time in the day to socialize, take a two hour break, etc. You will also have a 24hr period off per week.

Counselors live in a dorm-like building on the same floor as the campers they are supervising. Counselors' rooms are large with an ensuite bathroom and are usually shared with 4-6 other counselors.

Compensation: Monthly pay $1300 (Paid weekly) depending on space and experience. Free Housing and Meals for the duration of the contract. Travel Stipend. Staff Transport from NYC to Camp.
