Center for Sustainable Development: A Brief History   

The Office of Sustainability at the College of Charleston was established in August 2011 in order to create more pathways for student engagement in sustainability practices and programs both on and off campus. The Sustainability Literacy Institute was created in 2017 as part of the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) with the primary goal of embedding sustainability literacy across curricula. In February 2019, the Office of Sustainability and Sustainability Literacy Institute joined forces under the newly established Center for Sustainable Development, and in January 2021, the Center moved to Facilities Management. The Center serves as the hub for sustainability efforts on campus and as the guide for the implementation of The College’s Sustainability Action Plan, approved by the board of trustees in the Spring of 2021. 

 

Position Overview 

The Center’s Internship Program provides students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in making change for sustainability right here on campus. We offer opportunities for experiential learning, research, public engagement, operational management, and targeted professional development. 

  

The Marketing & Communications Lead position will hold dual responsibilities. The first area of focus is to produce and distribute content that highlights the Center’s diverse initiatives on various media channels, including Instagram, Facebook, Newsletter, and others. The second area of focus is to conceptualize, design and evolve marketing materials to promote the Center’s mission, initiatives and events. This person will be a part of the Center’s Media Team to continue engaging our target audiences through our existing brand identities.  

 

Core Duties  

Assist in development of engaging social media content that helps capture the Center’s initiatives both on and off campus. This includes but is not limited to: 

Multiple posts per week on each platform we utilize 

Reposting content from our partners  

Coordinating with other interns to highlight their programs/projects 

Execute timely distribution of prepared content by given deadlines 

Maintain a social media calendar to track content distribution and events 

Check and maintain the “Media & Graphic Design Request Form” and the #media-requests channel on Slack 

Abide by college-wide and Center marketing and design standards and timelines 

Assist in development of related creative content, such as  

Print materials (postcards, brochures, yard signs, etc.) 

Event posters and related materials (programs, sign-in sheets, tabling signage, etc.) 

Social media and virtual graphics 

Resilient Advocate (newsletter) 

Center giveaway items (t-shirts, stickers, pins, bags, cups, etc.) 

Coordinate messaging and content with the Center’s Media Team and leadership to ensure alignment across channels and support a strong, positive brand 

Create the visual for the CSD AY25 Annual Report, and manage the visualization of the report and its data via the Center’s data dashboard on Tableau 

Brainstorm and provide content suggestions/guidance as the CSD develops the events and programs for the academic year  

Note: The specific duties outlined above may be amended as needed.     

  

Skills and Experience Required 

A successful Marketing & Communications Lead will possess a team mentality, professional presence, strong communication skills, self-initiative, accountability, and a creative and collaborative spirit. Strong copy, writing and editing skills and attention to detail are required.  

Skills and Experience Preferred 

A working knowledge of Social Media platforms, Mailchimp, and Tableau. Existing photography and graphic design skills are preferred. 

Internship Program Requirements  

In addition to the specific duties mentioned above, the Intern will be required to complete the following as part of the core Center for Sustainable Development Internship Program:   

 Attendance: 

Weekly meetings (TBD)  

Office hours of 10-15/week (summer) 

Mandatory events and professional development/training (e.g., Field trips, Q’nversations Training, Racial Equity Training, etc.)  

2 Orientation tabling sessions (see orientation website for times/dates) 

CSD sponsored events during hours 

We encourage you to volunteer for our Mindful Move-out Program (April 27-May 2) 

Administrative Duties:  

Adherence to all CSD policies and guidelines 

Submit timesheets by given deadlines (semi-monthly)  

Maintain an Internship Checklist that includes: 

Goal Sheet 

Advisor Evaluations 

Self-Assessment 

Exit Interview  

Document accomplishments, challenges, and pertinent information for future Interns using our Transition Notes template  

Team Communication:  

Weekly meeting with Staff Advisor 

Project/program updates during weekly Team meetings  

Prompt (within 48-hr window) and professional response to Center-related communications (email, Slack) 

Collaboration & Participation: 

Contribute ideas during discussions and brainstorming sessions 

Provide feedback on all aspects of the internship 

Support CSD efforts outside individual project  

 

Contract extensions are contingent upon performance evaluations and student interest. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
