Communications Internship

 

Mission: Streets Are For Everyone (known as SAFE) aims to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers alike by working to reduce traffic-caused fatalities to ZERO.

SAFE addresses the problem holistically through direct education, broad awareness campaigns, partnerships, community outreach, policy and legislation, support for those impacted, and other proven strategies.
 

SAFE programs encompass:
 

  • Streets, Art, SAFE: A high school film and poster competition that teaches traffic safety while inspiring our future artists.
  • Finish The Ride & Finish The Run: Cycling and running events that bring thousands together to support street safety.
  • SAFE Support: Resources and direct support for victims of traffic collisions and their families.
  • State Policy and Legislation: Advocating for policy changes at the state-level that enhance road safety.
  • Grassroot Advocacy: Mobilizing road safety advocates to create safer roads and communities.

 

Needs: Under the Deputy Executive Director's guidance, the Communications Intern will help develop and execute communication strategies to expand SAFE’s reach and visibility. Responsibilities will include social media management, weekly and monthly newsletters, blog content research and writing, and coordination with different teams to ensure consistent messaging.

This internship is ideal for students in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related fields. The role requires a minimum eight-month commitment but twelve months is preferred and can be done remotely, with occasional in-office tasks and event participation.

ResponsibilitiesSocial Media Management

  • Develop and schedule engaging content for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, etc. to amplify SAFE’s mission and programs.
  • Monitor engagement and interact with the community, responding to messages and comments.
  • Track social media performance and suggest improvements based on analytics.

Newsletter & Email Communication

  • Assist in writing and formatting weekly and monthly newsletters covering policy updates, advocacy efforts, and program highlights.
  • Support the creation of targeted email campaigns to engage donors, volunteers, and community members.
  • Track and assess the impact of email outreach efforts.

Content Creation & Blogging

  • Research and write blog articles on traffic safety, policy updates, and program highlights.
  • Interview staff, volunteers, and community members for impactful storytelling.
  • Optimize written content for SEO to improve SAFE’s online visibility.

Internal & External Communications

  • Work with the Volunteer Director to coordinate communications for volunteers, ensuring clarity and engagement.
  • Work with the Director of Development on crafting donor appreciation messages, impact reports, and fundraising communications with the Director of Development.
  • Work with the Policy and Legislation team to coordinate communications about state-wide efforts and calls to action.  
  • Work with the Director of Local Advocacy to coordinate communications about local advocacy projects and calls to action. 
  • Support media and PR efforts, including press releases and media outreach.

Collaboration & Strategy Development

  • Help streamline SAFE’s messaging across platforms, ensuring consistency.
  • Assist in planning and executing awareness and advocacy campaigns.
     

Schedule: Flexible, ideally during work hours, but some parts could also be done outside of normal work hours. 


Additional Requirements

  • Familiarity with social media platforms, email marketing tools, and Google Drive.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Personal experience with traffic violence (as a pedestrian, cyclist, or driver) is valued but not required.
  • 20 hours per week on avg is required (could be less some weeks, with coordination). 

Compensation

This is a paid internship position at $18 per hour. 

Supervision

The Communications Intern will work directly with the Deputy Executive Director.
