Researcher - Remote
Position
Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Researcher to join our Oil & Gas team.
The Oil & Gas team’s research program focuses on producing global datasets that reflect current and future gas-fired power plants, oil and gas resources and their development, crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) transmission pipeline projects and their development, and natural gas transmission pipeline projects and their development. The Oil & Gas program currently has the following trackers: Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker, Global Oil Infrastructure Tracker, Global Gas Plant Tracker and the Global Gas Infrastructure Tracker.
The Challenge
According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.
About Global Energy Monitor
Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.
Location
GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Gathering and vetting data, contributing to shared datasets across the programs.
- Creating, formatting, and updating wiki pages on energy projects on the GEM.wiki platform.
- Assessing the environmental and social impacts of energy projects.
- Collaborating with other GEM staff members across different project areas.
- Supporting report development and analyses, as well as presentations based on GEM’s data.
- Using software and computers, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and operating systems.
- Miscellaneous support for other GEM projects as needed.
Required Qualifications

The following experience and skills are required for this position:
- At least one year of experience in energy/environmental research.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to pick up new technical skills quickly; possession of basic computer software and coding skills (e.g., Python/pandas, R, tabular data analysis, etc.).
- Explicit experience working with GIS technology (ArcGIS, QGIS) or with community-led mapping platforms like OpenStreetMap; ability to georeference raster maps to create digitized geolocation data.
- Knowledge of environmental and social impacts of energy, governmental and business institutional structures, and the political context of energy, particularly in Europe.
- Understanding of industry and energy transition issues and/or relevant technical background.
- Strong research skills, including attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented fact, and resourcefulness in using online search tools.
- Analytical skills, including experience in summarizing and presenting data.
- Professional writing skills.
- Knowledge of wiki formatting.
- Track record of working to advance social and environmental justice.
Pay and Benefits
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The salary is $38.51 per hour for locations in the United States.
Locations outside of the US: GEM aims to offer comparable salaries, benefits, and leave to employees living outside of the US in line with our fully transparent compensation framework. More information can be requested by contacting GEM’s People & Culture team.
