Pay: $14.00 per hour or for credit
Hours:
- Summer 12 weeks intensive, 40 hours per week (Fall & Spring Semester Internships also exist which offer 10-16 hours per week. It is possible to extend internships beyond the planned timeframes.)
Position Summary
The Development Intern will provide custom services and programs that aid nonprofits and community groups in the region. The Intern will assist with grant writing, annual updates and management of NCAC’s “NEPA Foundation List”, updates and management of NCAC’s Corporate Sponsorship List, development of custom funding searches, client training and administration of the Candid platform, and assistance promoting services and programs.
About the Nonprofit & Community Assistance Center (NCAC)
Founded in 1980 NCAC was created to strengthen and support Northeastern Pennsylvania’s nonprofit organizations and grantmakers in their service to our region. Through personalized funding searches, grant writing assistance, resource workshops, e-newsletters, private consultation and the NEPA Grantmakers Forums, NCAC offers a comprehensive slate of services designed to build the infrastructure that guides charitable entities into forces of change. Working with an average of 200 organizations and training over 500 individuals each year, NCAC is at the heart of the charitable-based work happening in this region. NCAC is an affiliate of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance, a community and economic development organization, serving a seven-county region including Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Schuylkill & Wayne Counties.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Update and enhance NEPA Foundation List: Conduct in-depth research on applicable Foundation opportunities in our region through use of the Candid online Foundation Directory and Guidestar. This work includes updating grant profiles, funding priorities, and contact information.
- Update list of Corporate Giving Opportunities relevant to our region: Investigate and understand the basics of Corporate Sponsorship opportunities available to nonprofit organizations in our area, detailing the local, regional & national entry points as well as other opportunities for nonprofits to benefit from such as large-scale volunteer days and employee match programs.
- Train in Candid’s Foundation Directory Database in order to coordinate access and facilitate hands-on training in the tool for NCAC and community members and assist clients in grant seeking efforts.
- Facilitate customized funding searches based upon program initiatives and specific grant proposals, as requested by NCAC membership and staff.
- Assist with prospecting new funding opportunities through innovative grants, unique regional opportunities and fundraising strategies for NCAC to maintain its stance as the premier expert on fundraising and charitable development, thereby modeling what we preach.
- Other duties will include assisting with general organizational operations such as assisting with grant applications, developing e-newsletters, assisting in event planning for Grantmaker Forums, identifying and soliciting sponsors for programming, updating internal databases and preparing actions plans after meetings with clients.
Skills Gained Include:
- Become an expert in fundraising research by using Candid (online Foundation Directory & Guidestar) search tools.
- Gain in-depth knowledge about the nonprofit fundraising world, from grant seeking to grant-writing techniques.
- Experience an insider’s look at the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit as well as the role fundraising plays in the strategic decision organizations must make.
- Create connections with nonprofit and grantmaking leaders, elected officials and state/federal dignitaries.
Requirements
- Tech-savvy and possessing a willingness to learn new tools and software.
- Interest in nonprofit and public administration sectors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects/tasks.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Dependable and punctual team player.
Qualifications
The desired candidate will demonstrate an interest in NCAC’s mission, and a willingness to learn. Ideal candidates will come from majors (Health Administration, Education, Social Work, Public Administration, Political Science) that typically are employed in the nonprofit or public sector. No specific fundraising experience is required, but good research, communication, multi-tasking, and technical skills are essential. Candidates should also have strong attention to detail as well as excellent organizational abilities.
