Seasonal Surveying Assistant / Engineering Intern with Ward County, Minot, ND.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Seasonal Surveying Assistant / Engineering Intern assists with surveying and project inspections on road and bridge construction projects. This position offers hands-on experience in field operations, data collection, and construction oversight, providing an excellent opportunity to gain practical knowledge in civil engineering and transportation infrastructure.
2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (“l” Indicates essential function)
- Assist with land surveys and data collection using total stations, GPS, and other surveying equipment.
- Support project inspectors in monitoring construction activities for compliance with design specifications, plans, and safety regulations.
- Collect and record field measurements, elevations, and site conditions for use in project documentation.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining survey notes, reports, and technical drawings.
- Perform basic quality control checks on materials and workmanship under supervision.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, contractors, and field staff to resolve project issues.
- Follow all workplace safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a secure working environment.

4. POSITION QUALIFICTIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (“l” Indicates essential function and ÿ Indicates preferred )
- A valid ND driver’s license and an insurable driving record, required.
- Ability to follow directions and learn quickly the job functions
- Ability to work independently and accomplish objectives without close supervision
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Civil Engineering, Surveying, Construction Management, or related program.
- Basic knowledge of surveying principles, engineering concepts, and construction practices.
- Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, or survey software is a plus.
5. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: (These support the essential function of the position)
- Working irregular or long schedules, as job requires
- Must be able to record information on log sheets
- Must have vision capable of seeing medium and long distances and good peripheral vision
- May be required to sit, bend, stretch, reach, stoop, kneel, climb ladders off and on of vehicles and equipment, and move about for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and walk long distances over rough terrain
- Regularly travels to survey sites and work outdoors
- Regularly works in varying temperatures and other weather-related situations
- Employees must wear protective clothing and gear, including ear plugs, boots, a hard hat, and safety goggles, when necessary.

County department heads and supervisors reserve the right to amend the functions assigned to this position, either temporarily or permanently, at any time as they determine the best interests of their departments. Further, employees may be assigned other or additional functions to fill in during the absence of other employees or vacancies in other positions.
