Audio Scriptwriter for Dramatic Audiobook Adaptations

Company: John Marshall Media

Location: Remote

Job Type: Freelance/Contract

About Us:

John Marshall Media is an award-winning audiobook production company with over 30 years of experience, including GRAMMY-winning productions and high-profile titles. We are expanding into dramatic audiobooks—full-cast productions that bring stories to life through immersive, dialogue-driven adaptations.

Job Description:

We are seeking talented freelance scriptwriters to adapt existing books into audio play scripts for dramatic audiobook productions. This role requires a strong ability to transform narrative prose into engaging, dialogue-heavy scripts while maintaining the essence of the original work.

Responsibilities:

  • Adapt existing books into fully scripted audio plays with dialogue, sound cues, and scene transitions.
  • Maintain the core themes, tone, and integrity of the original text while restructuring it for an audio-only experience.
  • Develop natural, engaging dialogue-driven storytelling that conveys action and emotion without visual elements.
  • Work closely with producers to refine scripts for voice actors and sound design.
  • Deliver high-quality scripts on deadline.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in scriptwriting, playwriting, or adapting literary works.
  • Strong ability to craft compelling dialogue and structure scenes for audio-first storytelling.
  • Understanding of audio play conventions, including the use of sound cues and narration sparingly.
  • Experience with audiobooks, podcasts, radio plays, or theatre scripts is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver faithful yet engaging adaptations.

Compensation:

  • Competitive freelance rates based on project scope.

How to Apply:

Please submit the following. All are required.

  1. A brief cover letter outlining your experience with script adaptation and audio storytelling.
  2. Audioplay Writing samples (including the sample of the book from which it was adapted. If you haven't done one yet, now is the time to start)
  3. Your resume and/or portfolio showcasing relevant work.

We look forward to collaborating with skilled writers to bring great books to life in a dramatic, immersive audio format!
