About the Job: Successful candidates will be employed by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) stationed at Stennis Space Center, MS. NAVOCEANO is the Navy’s premiere center for operational oceanography. 

These positions offer abundant opportunities for professional growth while you work as part of a highly skilled team providing support to the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Community and Naval operations.

Incumbents may be required to travel onboard oceanographic survey ships or locations outside the continental United States up to 50% of the time. Assignments when on travel may require considerable physical exertion such as standing for extended periods, frequently climbing stairways/ladders, occasionally lifting instrumentation in excess of 50 pounds, or crouching / working in restricted areas while the survey platform is in motion. Medical certification of fitness for sea duty is required.

Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate a strong ability to perform the following required tasks:

• Collect, process, review, and evaluate data during periods of temporary duty while traveling onboard survey vessels.
• Process, edit, and review oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, and/or geophysical data including the compilation and integration of data from various sources into a final product.
• Develop and implement new and improved methods and techniques used for the collection, processing, and analysis of oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, and/or geophysical survey data.
• Develop or maintain databases of oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, or geological observations and data.
• Develop or modify systems used for the collection, databasing, and processing of data, or the generation of products and services for dissemination to Naval customers.

Salary Range:    $40,332 to $190,424 per Annum

Basic Requirements: Appointments to Federal positions are typically made at the GS-05, GS-07, or GS-09 level and have a full performance level of GS-11, however appointments can be made up to the GS-15 level. Opportunities are available for applicants who meet the basic qualification requirements     outlined below in the following fields:

• Physical Scientist (1301) - Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science.
• Oceanographer (1360) - Degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline, plus 20 semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and engineering science.
• Physicist (1310)- Degree in physics or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
• Geophysicist (1313) - Degree that includes at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and physical sciences.
• Mathematics (1520) – Degree in mathematics that includes at least 24 semester hours in mathematics (including differential and integral calculus), and four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.
