Position Type: Regular Full-Time Non-Exempt
Location: Metro Location (Office in Minneapolis) or West Central Minnesota (Office in Willmar or St. Cloud)
Introduction:
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Minnesota Disability Law Center (MDLC) serves as the protection and advocacy system for people with disabilities in Minnesota. MDLC is seeking a full-time advocate position in the agency’s Social Security Representative Payee Program. Reviewer/Advocate may live in the metro area or west central Minnesota, with the ability to travel across the state. All work must be performed on a secure laptop issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA). This position will also require extensive travel and frequent in-person interviews with payees and beneficiaries. Pre-approved travel and mileage costs will be reimbursed. The applicant must have a dependable automobile, valid driver’s license, and current liability insurance. Position is contingent on passing an extensive SSA background check.

Responsibilities:
- Manages a caseload of clients who require representative payee services, ensuring their financial needs are met and their funds are used appropriately
- Schedules and conducts reviews of individuals and organizations appointed as Representative Payees by SSA
- Works independently on individual cases, but also participates in weekly Rep Payee team meetings and case conferences to discuss client progress and address any challenges
- Reviews and analyzes financial documents
- Maintains confidentiality as directed by SSA
- Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines related to representative payee services
- Prepares comprehensive reports detailing the representative payee review using approved SSA forms, citing deficiencies, notifications, issues, and referrals
- Applies the principles of Legal Aid’s Racial Justice Values Statement in all work-related business and interactions
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
- Ability to obtain a Level V moderate risk public trust government clearance by the United States Government Office of Personnel Management is required for the position
- A minimum of two years previous investigation or case management experience
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate financial records
- Excellent management of administrative skills, such as completing and filing paperwork, record keeping, and maintain and submit records in the SSA database
- Ability to adhere to strict deadlines, caseload goals, and grant requirements
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and cultural competency to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated functional knowledge in basic accounting principles and terminology
- Experience working effectively with people with disabilities
- Access to reliable transportation is required
- Valid Driver’s License and current liability insurance required
- Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office is required, including excel
- Extensive travel (weekly) is required, including possibly overnight trips across Minnesota
Preferred Qualifications:
- Second language ability, particularly Spanish, ASL, or Somali, is a plus
- Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences are a plus
Compensation Information:
$55,583 to $65,897 per year, depending on experience, plus reimbursement for travel expenses. This position includes benefits. Benefits include family medical and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 403(b) with employer match, FSA, employee assistance programs, and generous paid time off.
