Communications & Outreach Coordinator 

JOB SUMMARY
Develops, implements, and manages effective communications, marketing, and public outreach programs to inform and educate the local community about the services that the Rivanna Authorities perform; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Administration & Communications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate outreach efforts for the RWSA and RSWA.
  • Create innovative marketing, public relations, and communications programs that increase public awareness.
  • Distribute and track all marketing needs for education and outreach programs.
  • Develop and manage all content for social media and web sites.
  • Develop partnerships with other local, regional, and state organizations to further expand educational opportunities related to water, wastewater and solid waste/recycling.
  • Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to increase local awareness and understanding of the Authorities’ services.
  • Develop and implement a tour program and schedule for the water and wastewater treatment plants, the laboratory, and the RSWA Ivy MUC that includes programming for K-12, college, and adult learners.
  • Conduct tours of Rivanna Authority facilities for the public.
  • Develop and implement a classroom learning program for local K-12 schools.
  • Regularly visit classrooms as requested to educate children on both Authorities and what each does.
  • Maintain records of all outreach and education activities.
  • Organize volunteering opportunities for employees.
  • Attend community meetings involving the Authorities.
  • Assist with internal communications for employee events.
  • Perform administrative duties in relation to outreach, such as mailings.
  • Assist with budget preparation for community outreach activities and materials.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university with major work in education, environmental science, sustainability, public administration, communications, or a similar field.
  • Must have a minimum of two years of experience in education and outreach.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and presentations.
  • Experience managing social media pages and websites.
  • Should be proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint.
  • Experience with water, wastewater, and/or solid waste utilities is preferred.
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license.
  • Must be willing to undergo a comprehensive criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to effectively speak in public and to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong community partnerships.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. Ability to operate computers for data entry, word processing and/or accounting purposes.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb, balance, sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch, in accordance with applicable safety regulations and guidelines.
  • While performing this job, the employee may occasionally climb stairs, climb ladders, traverse catwalks, and/or travel in elevated, and/or remote locations, considering all necessary safety precautions and equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to hear, feel, smell, and speak, ensuring effective communication and awareness of surroundings.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds, adhering to proper lifting techniques and utilizing available equipment as necessary.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, ensuring full awareness of surroundings and tasks at hand.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be available for occasional weeknight/weekend work and public meetings. Non-exempt role
