2025 Summer Engineering Internships

The City of Ankeny is seeking students or recent graduates to fill our paid, temporary full-time Summer Engineering Internship Program. This is an opportunity to fully immerse in the day-to-day activities and gain experience in one of our Engineering Departments listed below. The compensation rate is $19.00 per hour, 40 hours per week for 13 weeks, beginning mid-May and ending in mid-August. Pre-employment drug screen and background check is required.

There are four internships available: 

  1. Development Engineering- Municipal Utilities Development Engineering Division
  2. Civil Construction Engineering- Public Works Engineering Division
  3. Traffic Engineering- Public Works Traffic Engineering Division

Development Engineering:
Assist with construction observation on privately funded public improvement projects.
Complete pavement core calculations, identify core locations, measure core samples for pavement thickness. Assist in the review of construction drawings and drainage studies.
 

Civil Construction Engineering:
Assists with construction observation on Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects including street, utility, and sidewalk infrastructure. Collects field measurements and construction quantities and performs engineering calculations. Prepares and tests samples of construction materials and documents field observations.

Traffic Engineering:
Perform traffic studies including vehicle counts & speeds, pedestrian counts, gap studies, and high-resolution data analysis. Perform data collection using Global Positions System (GPS) equipment. Assist technicians with preventative maintenance and repairs of traffic signals and signs.

Perform other related duties as needed

Entry Requirements and Skills
All applicants who are pursuing an associate or bachelor degree and recent graduates will be considered; however ,preference will be given to students majoring in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, or a related field who have completed their freshman year or higher.
Knowledge of office software (Word, Excel, etc.) and be capable of working with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other engineering automation tools is a plus.


REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years old.
Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in office environment.
Works in field environment.
Climbs and walks over uneven terrain.
Performs outside work in all kinds of weather conditions.
