Summer Internship, Digital Strategies (Engineering and Audience Outreach), Pew Research Center

Organization Overview 

Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research in the areas of U.S. politics and policy views; media and journalism; internet and technology; science and society; religion and public life; global attitudes; race and ethnicity; and U.S. social and demographic trends. Pew Research does not take policy positions. It is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew Research Center’s work is carried out by a staff of 176.  

 

Position Summary: 

The summer undergraduate internship is a paid opportunity during the summer of 2025. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 30 hours/week and are paid $18.50/hour. This internship is available to undergraduate students with an interest in digital development and audience outreach.  

 

 

The Center’s digital team includes designers, engineers, producers, audience outreach strategists, user experience and analytics managers. The team is responsible for publishing and promoting Center research across multiple digital platforms including pewresearch.org, email newsletters and social media. The digital team will host two interns in 2025 on its engineering and audience sub-teams. 

 

Engineering: The Pew Research Center engineering team is actively involved in the Gutenberg project, to modernize WordPress, the platform that powers 41% of the internet. During your internship, you will learn to build interactive and dynamic web applications using Gutenberg Blocks. Your contributions may even be included in WordPress, impacting a significant portion of the internet. By the end of your internship, you will have a deeper understanding of the Gutenberg project, modern WordPress development, and what building, managing, and supporting an enterprise WordPress platform takes. 

 

Audience Outreach: The Pew Research Center audience outreach team is responsible for the presentation of the Center’s research findings on social media platforms including Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) and for the Center’s email newsletters. Applicants should have an interest in the Center’s research topics and polling and survey research, as well as a demonstrated interest in storytelling. 

 

Some typical tasks of the audience outreach 2025 intern may include: 

  • Drafting engaging social media posts, including captions, graphics, and videos, in alignment with our brand voice. 
  • Assisting in brainstorming and creating content for special campaigns and projects. 
  • Monitoring brand mentions and tags across platforms and drafting responses to audience questions. 
  • Experimenting with different video styles to share the Center’s findings and build public understanding of polling and survey research methodologies. 
  • Analyzing the performance of social media content to identify best practices.

Pew Research Center is an office-based workplace, with all staff working in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office two core days weekly (Tuesday and Wednesday).  Staff have the flexibility to work remotely up to three days per week. A modest relocation stipend is available for candidates that need it.  

 

Internship Dates: June 2, 2025 – August 15, 2025.  Flexibility exists for a start date of June 16, 2025 – August 29, 2025. 

 

Education/Training/Experience 

  • College students pursuing a bachelor’s or associate degree (and completed a minimum of their second year).  
  • Engineering team applicants should have experience working with React. 
  • Interest in digital development, audience outreach, public opinion, polling and social science.

The deadline for applications is February 7, 2025.  Interviews will take place virtually in February and March, with the goal of all hiring decisions being made by the end of March 2025.
