Description

The USARIEM Military Nutrition Division (MND) conducts research on nutritional issues affecting the health, performance and mission-readiness of military personnel, and supports the US Army Surgeon General’s responsibilities as the Department of Defense’s executive agent for nutrition research.  Studies within the MND have identified relationships between the gut microbiota and health and performance outcomes in military personnel.  Ongoing studies are using nutritional approaches targeting the gut microbiota to improve military health and performance.  The MND is seeking a BS or MS-level research participant to support this line of research.

What will I be doing?

Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected candidate will:

  • Participate in the execution of human research studies conducted at the USARIEM and locations throughout the United States.
  • Receive hands-on experience collecting, processing, and analyzing biological samples and human subjects data.
  • Learn and conduct research techniques, including ELISA, indirect calorimetry, physiological monitoring, and exercise testing.
  • Gain experience analyzing and interpreting scientific data for presentation and publication.

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a one-year research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

About USARIEM

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.

The Institute has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces various essential products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine, planning doctrine, materiel development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

Candidates should have recently earned a BS or MS degree in nutritional science, physiology, biology, microbial ecology or a related field. Basic laboratory and data analytic skills are preferred. Strong communication and organizational skills are required.  

US Citizenship and travel are required.
