Intern, Research & Strategy

Strategists at Smart uncover insights and identify opportunities to create impactful solutions for everyday challenges. They dig deep to understand what people truly care about, making sense of complexity and framing it into clear, design-actionable insights.

We’re looking for a proactive and curious intern to join us this winter and support client or internal projects through research, analysis, and strategic thinking.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Act as supporting team members on client projects working closely with researchers, strategists and other designers
  • Participate in planning and conducting qualitative user research, including creating discussion guides and screeners, setting up and moderating user interviews, SME and stakeholder interviews
  • Help synthesize research findings into key insights and developing appropriate linkage to business implications 
  • Use tools like journey maps, personas, or opportunity frameworks to inform strategy and design
  • Conduct desk research to explore trends, markets, and competitive landscapes
  • Participate in brainstorms and workshops to generate insights and ideas
  • Outside of client work, research new tools and technologies to enhance Smart’s research practice and analyze industry trends to explore new offerings for Smart
     

Naturally, you have:

  • Has or working towards a degree in user-centered design, strategic design, UX/UI or a related field
  • At least 1 internship in a relevant role (e.g.,user research, design, product development, strategy, branding)
  • Hands-on experience or interest in preparing, conducting, and analyzing qualitative user research independently (internships or school projects ok!)
  • Familiarity with tools like journey maps, personas, or other frameworks to synthesize and communicate insights from user research
  • Ability to connect with interviewees from all demographics and backgrounds
  • No fear of teamwork, brainstorming sessions or presenting in front of your team
  • A portfolio or case study examples that show your full process (not just end designs or recommendations)
  • Bonus: experience with mixed-methods user research/surveys

 

Logistics:

  • The role is based in Brooklyn and will need to be local.
  • Interns must be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week and more as projects require.
  • Intern rates depend on educational level and will fall between $20-24/hour.
  • Target start date is January 27 or February 3 for 3 months.
