Senior Writer and Editorial Manager
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications, the Senior Writer and Editorial Manager is responsible for writing, editing and content creation across various platforms and documents for the Communications office and Eastman School of Music at large. The Senior Writer should be detail-oriented, with superb writing skills, and able to write, edit, and contribute to multiple projects at once, together with colleagues in the Marketing & Communications Office, and in collaboration with other Eastman offices. This position plays a crucial role in shaping content for print and online communications. They will edit for accuracy, clarity, and quality, and enforces superior editorial standards. Senior Writer¿s responsibilities include the editorial content and production of the school¿s alumni magazine, NOTES; weekly internal newsletter; as well as copy for digital and print advertising to promote Eastman to identified target audiences. This position also works directly with the Dean to assist various writing projects including citations, remarks, awards, and other editorial content as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
With considerable latitude for exercise of independent judgment and creativity, responsibilities include the following:
Eastman Notes (Alumni Magazine)- Content Creation and Management
Designs overall themes, article inclusion and oversights of Eastman¿s Alumni magazine (published bi-annually)
Writes feature articles for Eastman Notes
Works with outside vendors and freelancers for design and ultimate printing of publication
Content Creation:
Schedules and writes blog posts and digital articles (including interviews with faculty and staff), for use in editorial placement in magazine or for media opportunities, in collaboration with the AD of Public Relations and Director of Communications.
Creates: marketing materials (advertising copy, brochures, radio); Website text/biographies; Program notes for special concert programs and events such as commencement.
Internal Newsletter Production:
Designs, edits, collects and organizes content for Eastman Weekly (weekly e-newsletter)
Solicits and gathers news, drafts a weekly message from the Dean, Concerts and Events calendar, writing, and editing news items, choosing photographs, and writing captions
Editorial Management:
(Maintains standards for style and accuracy of publications produced by Communications office, as well as other offices and departments)
Manages documentation and AP style for: Press materials (including all press releases and communications sent out schoolwide); Marketing materials and collateral; Advancement, admissions, concert office and other unit materials (various formats)
Remarks and Citation Drafting:
Writes award presentation texts (i.e., honorary degree speeches and citations)
Assists Director of Communication and Dean with written and oral remarks/drafts for various events.
Other assigned duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree Required in journalism, publishing, communications, marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
3 years of experience in journalism, editorial, communications, or similar field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required
5 years preferred
Superior writing, editing, communication skills, and an ability to improve text and craft stories that satisfy a demanding, intelligent, technology-savvy, and highly literate audience required.
Strong organizational, time management, and planning skills; an ability to meet unexpected challenges and juggle numerous tasks required.
An eye for tone and nuance; an ability to restructures stories, find buried leads, and improve clarity and readability required.
Demonstrated experience with print or web publishing. An ability to write long- and short-form pieces for both print and digital communications is key required.
Extensive knowledge of music (familiarity with musicians and terms) required.
High-level writer and collaborator, with experience with copy editing for both print and digital media required.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $60,431 - $84,603 Annually
