Director of Member Engagement
Position Description
The Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) seeks a dynamic, proactive, highly collaborative, and energetic individual to help us advance our mission to lead, strengthen and support Michigan's community of philanthropy.

CMF is a fiscally healthy organization seeking to grow with an annual budget of approximately $5 million, of which member dues generate $1.7 million in revenue and members provide general operating support of $1 million. CMF is also unique with endowment resources of over $33 million to support member-related programming.
The Director of Member Engagement is responsible for developing and managing an organization-wide plan that continuously fosters an active and thriving membership network and advancing development of the organization’s revenue sources.
Responsibilities
What You’ll Do:
- Work in partnership with the membership committee and internal teams to develop and implement strategies around member recruitment, retention, and appreciation.
- Build and foster member and partner relationships to greatly understand the work of Michigan philanthropy and the field at large and support members’ peer-to-peer network building.
- Connect with and convene members to provide onboarding and orientation resources and seek input on issues and services important to them, maintaining a strong commitment to member satisfaction and an internal feedback loop of information.
- Support the development of membership-related content for internal and external communications, including materials for board and committee meetings and core membership collateral, working in partnership with the CMF communications team.
- Serve as the primary contact for information related to member experience and the related value proposition for current and prospective members and manage (oversee) content for the online membership hub.
- Manage the membership renewal process and, as part of CMF’s commitment to continuous improvement, refine the process based on member feedback and established/emerging best practices.
- Develop opportunities to deepen and expand CMF’s financial support, diversifying revenue sources for organization operation, including sponsorship for the annual conference and member-led special initiatives supported by CMF, providing leadership in prospect identification, research, due diligence and cultivation.
- Write grant and sponsorship proposals and complete related reporting requirements.
- Oversee membership data collection and concise reporting of that data, working in partnership with the technology and data team and in alignment with organization-wide evaluation efforts.
- Inform the review and development of programming, services, and supports that can advance member engagement goals in alignment with CMF’s strategic framework, working in partnership with the CMF learning services team.
- Stay up to date regarding news, data and trends in membership, fund development and management in the nonprofit sector.
- Direct and oversee the work of consultants that support member engagement.
- Oversee budgeting of project initiatives.
- All other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
What You’ll Need:
- Demonstrated commitment to CMF values – equity, diversity, inclusion, integrity, collaboration and engagement.
- Well-honed understanding of the philanthropic or nonprofit sector (or both), with a finely tuned sense of the roles each plays in society.
- Experience in membership supports as well as demonstrated ability to steward and close fundraising opportunities.
- Outstanding strengths developing plans and setting goals aligned with organizational strategies.
- Strong relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles and the ability to articulate a compelling case for support to stakeholders.
- Exemplary written and verbal communications skills with experience representing an organization publicly.
- Experience in cross-functional management of staff, colleagues, consultants and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work cooperatively, supervise and motivate staff, and foster team spirit.
- Self-starter with the ability to manage several projects at once and prioritize amid competing demands, responding effectively to time-sensitive and emergent opportunities and challenges.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum five years’ relevant experience in philanthropy, the nonprofit sector or a membership association preferred.
- Knowledge of standard concepts, practices and procedures used in membership services, fund development and program development.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred.
- Knowledge and comfort with effective technologies for constituent relationship management and Microsoft Office Suite; technological literacy and adaptability are essential.
- A need to travel within the state and out of state to meet with members, potential members and attend meetings and conferences.
Physical and Mental Activities and Requirements:
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands to finger, handle or feel to perform the duties. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk around to perform the duties. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- The employee must be able to operate forms of office technology.
- This position may require travel by automobile and airplane.
- This position requires the employee to make decisions in a timely manner and anticipate all of the potential ramifications of decisions made.
- The employee must be able to read and interpret documents, understand/follow complex written and oral instructions, be able to express themselves clearly/concisely, perform mathematical functions and handle multiple, concurrent tasks.
- This position requires regular and predictable attendance with flexibility to work both in our Detroit office and remotely.
Salary & Benefits
We value our people. In honoring a healthy workplace that offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits and a supportive working environment, for this position, the pay range is $100,000 – $110,000.
