Part-Time Fellow, City of Miami Commissioner's Office

City of Miami, Commission District 1 Office Part-Time Fellowship Program

 

Program Overview:

The City Commissioner's Office is offering a part-time fellowship program designed for university students interested in gaining hands-on experience in public service and local government. Fellows will work directly in the City Commissioner's office, assisting with day-to-day tasks and learning about the role of local government in addressing community needs.

 

Position Title: Part-Time Fellow 

Location: City Commissioner's Office 

Hours: Flexible hours between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, up to 20 hours per week 

Duration: Semester or academic year (with the possibility of extension)

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Answer Office Phone Calls 

   Fellows will serve as the first point of contact for residents calling the office. They are expected to answer calls professionally and route them to the appropriate staff member or department.

   

2. Solve Problems for Residents 

   Fellows will address inquiries or issues raised by residents via phone or email. They will assess problems and escalate to upper management when necessary. Training will be provided to help fellows differentiate between issues they can resolve and those requiring higher-level intervention.

   

3. Attend Events (As Needed) 

   Fellows may be asked to attend community events, commission meetings, or other official gatherings to represent the office and assist with event coordination and logistics.

   

4. Inventory and Office Management 

   Fellows will be responsible for maintaining inventory and ensuring the office is properly stocked with essential supplies. This includes tracking the usage of items and notifying appropriate staff when reordering is needed.

   

5. Office Software Proficiency 

   Fellows must be familiar with or willing to learn Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. These programs will be used for scheduling, managing data, drafting documents, and communicating with team members.

 

6. Flexible Schedule 

   Fellows will have the option to work flexible hours between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, making this program ideal for students balancing coursework and extracurricular activities.

 

7. Attention to Detail 

   The office environment requires careful attention to detail in all tasks, from documenting resident inquiries to managing office supplies. Fellows will be expected to maintain a high level of accuracy and thoroughness in their work.

- Current enrollment in an accredited university or college

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Interest in government, public administration, or community service

- Commitment to a flexible work schedule
