Public Works and Grants Intern

The Public Works and Grant Administration Intern will work under the supervision of the Capital Improvement Program and Grants Manager within the Public Works Department. The intern will support the CIP and Grants Manager to develop a streamlined grant administration process for the Village. In addition to this primary task, the intern will have the opportunity to observe, learn, and work directly with staff in the Public Works Department by performing a variety of support tasks and duties. 

While with the Village, the intern will gain experience in grant writing, project management, resilient infrastructure projects, municipal public works department tasks, and developing standard operating procedures. 

This internship opportunity will provide insight on municipal funding sources and programs (local, state, and federal), and the different compliance requirements for each grant, and the ability to practice and strengthen research, writing, process development, and communication skills.  

The primary task of this internship is to  work on developing a Grant Administration and Reporting Protocol for the Village. The Village has 20+ active grants with different reporting requirements. The intern will delve into the specifics of each grant agreement, and with the support of the CIP and Grants Manager, develop a Village-wide protocol that can be used by all project managers with grant funding on their projects. 

Interested candidates must be currently enrolled in a public administration, pre-law, political science, public policy, urban planning, or business degree program in their college or university. 

In addition, the student must have the following characteristics:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Ability to problem-solve and to complete projects within specified timeframes. 
  • Strong time management skills
  • Be detail oriented
  • Strong organizational skills and interest in improving workflow and process for administrative tasks
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels.
  • Ability to time manage, self-motivate, and work productively independently or with a team. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (word, ppt, excel, outlook, teams, etc.).

15-20 hours per week (in-person) for at least 1 semester (3 months). The option to do 2 semesters or a full year is preferred but not required. (Flexible schedule/working 3-4 days a week)
