$69,955- $107,932 annual, Pay dependent on qualifications and in accordance with Oregon's Pay Equity Act.

Position Overview:

Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) is seeking a collaborative individual dedicated to public service and engaging with our vibrant and diverse communities.  This position will work closely with ESF leadership, community partners, elected officials, and the public to build strategies that help make our communities a great place to live.

The primary role of the Communications Coordinator is to plan, develop, implement, and manage public information dissemination, and coordinate community outreach efforts regarding ESF programs.  Prior knowledge or experience in fire or EMS services is not required, and ESF is willing to train and educate the right person who believes in the mission to serve and educate others.

Training & Experience:

The City will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications.  Such a way to meet minimum qualifications could include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, fire services, or related field, and;
  • 2 or more years’ experience creating and delivering communication programs including experience working with news media

Preferences may be given for knowledge and experience:

  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Prior public sector experience
  • Prior first responder experience (fire, EMS, police, etc.)

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Selection and Interview Process:

Top candidates will be invited to interview and will be required to provide 3-5 work product samples. This can include public information pieces (brochure, newsletter, flyer, news release, public service announcement, curriculum outline, web page, etc.). These are to be your own work. If you do not have work product samples, please create 3-5 information pieces related to this position. Finalists will be contacted directly with additional details. Please note that you will not get these materials back, so please make copies if you wish to keep the originals.

 As a part of our selection process, it will be necessary for candidates to provide the names and email addresses of up to five professional references (including two managers) that can provide information on work performance.  To avoid any delay in the process, we ask candidates to start gathering reference information now (name, email address, contact info and time period you worked together).  Additional information regarding reference checking will be emailed to candidates at a later date through the SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360 system.

The selection process will include: reference checks and criminal background check.

All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veteran’s Preference in Public Employment Law.
