The Department of Revenue (DOR) is hiring multiple Excise Tax Agent (ETA) (Revenue Special Agent) positions for two divisions within DOR:

  1. Division of Alcohol Beverages (DAB); Bureau of Enforcement; and 
     
  2.  Division of Income, Sales, & Excise Tax (IS&E) Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI). 

These law enforcement positions are responsible for conducting easy to average difficulty investigations of potential violations of Wisconsin laws; providing technical assistance to government officials, and the public; providing administrative and staff support to other areas within DOR, and providing liaison with local, state, and federal enforcement law agencies and prosecutors' offices. 
 

Some high-level key differences between the various positions are:

  • DAB:  Investigations and enforcement of alcohol beverage and video gambling laws.  Technical assistance to members of alcohol beverage and video gaming industries
     
  • OCI:  Investigations and enforcement of alcohol beverage tax, cigarette, electronic vaping devices, tobacco products, and video gambling. Technical assistance to members of cigarette, tobacco products, electronic vaping devices, video gaming and alcohol beverage industries


The register created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in the next six months within DOR.  Job locations will depend on the needs of the divisions, and may include one of the Department of Revenue office locations in Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton, Eau Claire, Green Bay or Wausau.

Currently we are filling four positions: 

  • DAB:  Currently filling three positions.  One position will be assigned to each of the following headquarter locations:  1. Madison; 2. Eau Claire; and 3. Appleton.
     
  • OCI:  Currently filling one position that will be assigned to either Green Bay or Appleton as their headquarter location. 

 

Special Requirements

  1. Must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB); or eligible for immediate recertification through the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice reciprocity.
     
  2. Possession of a valid driver’s license and eligibility to use state vehicles.  See Fleet Driver and Management Policies and Procedures Manual
     
  3. Ability to possess and carry firearms and other state issued equipment and maintain proficiency in their use per DOR policy and law enforcement standards.
     
  4. Must be at least 21 years of age (e.g., alcohol, T21-Tobacco 21 Federal Law)

Physical Demands And Work Environment

  1. Frequent travel with some overnight stays.
     
  2. Ability to participate in criminal investigations in a field setting which may involve making an arrest, subduing a suspect, gaining forcible entry to and searching dwellings, conducting prolonged surveillance, and defending oneself against physical attack.
     
  3. Ability to participate in investigative activities in hostile and stressful environments such as locations with high violent crime rates; remote and/or isolated locations in company of armed, violent, and unpredictable suspects; in automobiles at high rates of speed and requiring unsafe driving maneuvers; in unclean and germ-ridden conditions with individuals openly hostile to law enforcement representatives.
     
  4. Possibility of exposure to unknown substances and chemicals used in the manufacture of drugs.
     
  5. Ability to wear a concealed bulletproof vest, be armed with a handgun and handcuffs, and may be armed with a rifle.

Remote/Telework up to 60%. Note: During probation you will have the opportunity to gradually increase to 60% (i.e. working remotely three (3) days per week, and will report to your assigned headquarters location, two (2) days per week) within 9 months (of your 12-month probation) based on performance and workload needs.  These positions require extensive field work which may alter the telework schedule remote and in office days.

Salary Information

Salary for these Excise Tax Agent positions (schedule-range 07-03) is $80,621 to $ 92,206 annually ($38.76 to $44.33 hourly), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits.  Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package!  Current state employees pay will be based on the provisions in the Compensation Plan.  A twelve-month probationary period is required.

 

Job Details

The Department of Revenue will conduct criminal background, tax compliance checks and fingerprint checks on candidates prior to offer of hire. 

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.  The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.  DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

  4. Experience writing investigative reports of violations of one or more of the following: alcohol beverages, cigarettes, tobacco products, vapor products, or video gambling
     
  5. Public speaking experience on law enforcement topics
