DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY

Student Housing and Residential Life at California State University, Monterey Bay provides a vibrant and inclusive campus living experience. Currently, CSUMB's residential communities house more than 50% of the student body and have a capacity of over 3600 beds. The Student Housing and Residential Life staff are dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging, personal growth, and academic success among students. Various housing options cater to different preferences and needs, providing students with a range of living arrangements including Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and family housing. Emphasizing community engagement, CSUMB's Residential Life programs offer a variety of social and educational activities, creating opportunities for students to connect with their peers and develop lifelong friendships.


 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Operations and Outreach, the Marketing and Outreach Specialist (MOS) is responsible for marketing and outreach functions within Student Housing and Residential Life and the student housing program. They include, but are not limited to, project management for annual outreach efforts related to recruitment and retention of residential students, graphic design and publication, social media outreach, video production, and public speaking. This role assists with conception and deployment of large-scale departmental campaigns to recruit applicants for on-campus housing, housing renewal, and assistance with telling the department's story through innovative communication.

The Marketing and Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Associate Director for Operations and Outreach, as well as other Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) staff, to actively promote the on-campus living experience. The MOS will display an active commitment to engaging students, parents/supporters, and university partners via numerous mediums as well as developing procedural best practices and sharing the SHRL story. Additionally, the incumbent should have a working understanding of research and data analytics in order to support related decisions. The incumbent will need to have a highly collaborative attitude and strong communication skills, exercise critical thinking, and be an innovator in their areas of responsibility. Some evenings and weekend work will be required.

 

Examples of Duties

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:

 

• This position will develop and implement customer outreach strategies to boost engagement, recruitment, and retention.

• Develop outreach and advertising strategies to support housing recruitment and retention, as well as resident engagement, in first-year and sophomore housing, apartments, and Living Learning Communities (LLCs).

• Design themes for all outreach campaigns and manage the dissemination of campaign information to various target audiences/groups.

• Create, interpret, revise, and/or update materials for outreach purposes, including determining strategic placement and making the presentation of information (printed or digital) attractive and appealing.

• Manage all SHRL social media streams for prospective and continuing students which includes the management of all information and marketing efforts to students and their supporters, including attending programs to collect and curate content.

• Manage SHRL public content in the form of banners, posters, formal framed artwork, electronic displays etc., and all marketing materials posted publicly throughout campus.

• Participate in University's and SHRL outreach programs, which include, but are not limited to, campus-wide panels, orientations, and coordination of various Housing events/tours throughout the year.

• Participate in campus-wide outreach event planning meetings/committees/groups, including but not limited to Open House, Admitted Otter Day, and Orientation.

• Coordinate meetings and events ensuring that relevant, timely, and correct information is made available/presented to students, supporters, faculty, staff, and the general public under appropriate guidelines.

• In conjunction with supervisory staff, coordinate all staffing and department presence at campus-wide outreach activities and programs.

• Attend daytime and after-business hours campus-wide programs and meetings, as needed, to promote SHRL and its efforts.

• Develop community relations and contacts to outside businesses (e.g. property management companies, owners of large apartment complexes, and realtors).

• Serve as a contact for any university special guest campus housing tour. Special tour requests or special guests to campus are either personally toured by this position or organized by this position in conjunction with other professional staff within the department.

• Assist with creation of videos and graphics to be utilized for various SHRL efforts.

• Assists with providing resident statistical data.

• Ensures that projects stay within the budget guidelines of the department.

• Supports Enrollment Management and Student Affairs outreach and communications efforts as needed.

This position requires working on campus with students, staff and faculty. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. In the fall, students, faculty, staff, and the community can expect that masks will be encouraged and that the appropriate degree of social distancing will be in place in all areas based on evolving guidance. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to be vaccinated before coming to campus. • Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and work independently within specified time constraints while demonstrating sound judgment and decision-making skills.

• Strong technical writing and editing skills. Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise, professional quality documents for internal/external publication.

• Must demonstrate effective oral communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with staff inside and outside of the department.

• Basic knowledge and understanding of emerging marketing trends and related techniques.

• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and events simultaneously, including setting priorities and completing deliverables by deadlines.

• Proven ability to use social media to share information and engage with target audience. Advanced computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets and marketing and publishing software.

• Technical ability in audio, visual, and cinematography equipment including accompanying software.

• Ability to gather, build and analyze data from multiple sources to meet necessary reporting needs.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree AND two or more years of progressively increasing general public/media relations, or related field, responsibilities which have involved supporting, monitoring, and coordinating website development, social media, print media, digital marketing and video work through a system of internal procedures to ensure the efficient operation of an organization. Significant outreach and communication work as an undergraduate can count as one year of experience.

 

Additional experience, which has demonstrated the requisite skills/abilities, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.

• Knowledge of advanced photo and publishing software such as Adobe Suite or similar.

• Experience working with university housing or residential life programs.

• A firm understanding of the value and purpose supporting living on-campus.

• Demonstrated fluency in Spanish.

• Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret and implement, policies as they relate to student housing.

The hourly hiring range for this position is $23 - $27. Classification: Grade 3, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
