Job Overview

Contribute daily to make Federal News Network the leading provider of timely and relevant news and information about the people, policies and programs of the federal government with a focus on technology, human resources, financial management, Defense, acquisition and other management areas.Develop sources that result in original news content. Find and schedule government, industry and academia guests for interviews and long-form on-air shows while also understanding how the content will be published on our website and through social media.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, research and pitch interview/story ideas
  • Collaborate with Executive/Deputy Editors, anchors, reporters and digital editors on content
  • Identify and develop relationships with government, industry and academia sources
  • Contact and schedule newsmakers for recorded interviews
  • Write anchor leads, tags and teases in a clear, concise, accurate fashion on deadline
  • Attention to detail with content, including audio editing, fact checking, grammar, punctuation
  • Conduct interviews with newsmakers as needed
  • Coordinate with digital editors on content worthy of website or sharing on socials
  • Produce live programming or brokered audio as needed (For Your Benefit, , FEDTalk)
  • Produce/voice news stories/sales features as needed
  • Operate and troubleshoot newsroom systems; Burli, Airtable, Wide Orbit, and any/all radio equipment used in producing live or recorded audio
  • Flexibility in work schedule
  • Work in compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management and clients
  • Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years' reporting/producing experience
  • Degree in Journalism or related field
  • Experience covering/working with the people, programs, and policies of the public sector
  • Be a team player willing to take on challenges as they present themselves
  • Positive attitude
  • Come up with new or innovative ideas to help grow Federal News Network
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sources
  • Demonstrated ability to write for web and for broadcast
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct interviews for broadcast with newsmakers
  • Technical and computer experience including sound recording and editing
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to keep up to date with current affairs in order to ensure that show content is topical and well-researched.
  • Ability to undertake research in a subject and obtain interviews and other material to support the story being told
  • Ability to monitor audience data and tailor shows to meet demands
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
    • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to manipulate computer keys and general office equipment (telephone, copier, calculator, etc.) for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to hear and speak clearly and follow both oral and written direction.
