Project Summary

Intern will participate in fieldwork, including overnight travel, as well as computer work in the office. Project examples include: UAS, GNSS, and/or GPR data collection at MNHS site(s). Intern will synthesize site history, archaeological investigations, geospatial, and remote sensing data in a report/presentation. The intern’s specific project will depend on their skills/interests. 

Ideal Degrees

Junior or Senior standing in Anthropology/Archaeology, OR an interest in Archaeology AND study in one of the following areas: Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Earth Science, or Environmental Science.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in fieldwork for geospatial and remote sensing projects (e.g. ground penetrating radar, uncrewed aircraft systems aka drones, and high precision global navigation satellite systems data collection).
  • Communicate verbally and in writing, a synthesis of research results, including geospatial, geophysical, and aerial data for archaeological projects.
  • Create maps using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online that meet organizational standards for reporting and contain data from external sources, organizational geodatabase(s), derived data, as well as data collected during fieldwork.

Qualifications

  • Desire to work in the field as well as in the office
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Detail-oriented
  • Coursework in geographic information science (GIS)
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, and Google Suite.
  • Desired, but not required: Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.

Knowledge Intern is Expected to Gain

  • Collection of GNSS data using ArcGIS Field Maps and Trimble Catalyst DA2 at multiple sites for use in cartography and reporting.
  • Engagement in uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) flight missions, including site research, equipment preparation and loading, setup/take-down, flight operations, and on-going maintenance.
  • Conducting geophysical surveys using ground penetrating radar (GPR), including establishing a grid and documenting landscape features and obstacles. Also, post-process survey data and interpret the results with guidance.
