GIS Mapping Research Intern (Public Health)

Position Summary: We are seeking a talented and passionate Remote GIS Mapping Research Intern to join our team. This role will support the Research Director in conducting public health research and developing GIS mapping projects. The intern will work on diverse tasks, from data analysis and spatial visualization to project management and stakeholder communication, gaining hands-on experience in a mission-driven, public health-focused organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • GIS Mapping: Utilize GIS technology to map vulnerable populations and address public health challenges such as food deserts and type 2 diabetes.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct research and gather spatial data through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Analyze and interpret GIS data to identify public health trends and issues.
  • Content Creation: Develop visually compelling maps and reports to communicate research findings. Write accessible and optimized content for diverse audiences.
  • Project Management: Assist in planning and managing GIS projects, including data collection, team coordination, and periodic meetings.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with stakeholders to determine GIS project needs, conduct meetings and presentations, and document results.
  • Policy Support: Use GIS mapping to support public health policy development and advocacy efforts, providing visual evidence of policy impacts.

Internship Objectives:

  • Acquire new skills and advance existing ones through on-the-job training.
  • Develop goals and implement processes to meet those goals.
  • Communicate effectively and make professional presentations.
  • Practice writing skills in professional reports and papers.
  • Advocate for political, social, or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations.
  • Apply leadership and management principles to address relevant public health issues.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Genuine passion for public health, GIS technology, and promoting healthier lifestyles.
  • Self-starter who is highly motivated and proactive.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, research, and analytical skills.
  • Competency in GIS software (e.g., Esri ArcGIS), Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and advanced project management technology.
  • Ability to work independently and with teams/mentors/colleagues.
