Project Summary

The Program Intern will be expected to:

  1. Develop two (2) lesson or program plans to be used at Split Rock Lighthouse.
  2. Complete a research project on a topic that is of interest to the intern, contributes to Split Rock’s programming, and creates a tangible end product such as an outline, book, multimedia presentation, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Research
  • Regular progress reports to Program Manager
  • Develop and deliver programs that serve diverse audiences
  • Interact/engage with the public using a variety of interpretive techniques
  • Help identify future areas of growth in public programming
  • Support daily operations of the historic site
  • Customer service

Qualifications

  • Ability to travel to Split Rock Lighthouse for assigned shifts
  • Willingness to travel to MNHS History Center for intern seminars. State vehicle carpool may be an option, or personal vehicle reimbursement will be available.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to research, write, and communicate findings clearly and accurately
  • Familiarity with museum education and/or interpretation
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to listen to the public and be responsive to inquiries and comments
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to work weekends
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Computer skills, especially familiarity with Google suite
  • Knowledge of Split Rock Lighthouse, its history, and Minnesota’s North Shore

Knowledge Intern is Expected to Gain

  • Program development & implementation
  • Familiarity with interpretive techniques, public communication, and current interpretive best practices
  • Understanding of the daily operations of an historic site & tourist destination
  • Research skills
