Reference And Instruction Practicum Student

School of the Art Institute of Chicago | John M. Flaxman Library

Anticipated Start Date late August 2024 for the Fall 2024 semester.

Title: Reference & Instruction Practicum Student/Intern
Basic Function:

The John M. Flaxman Library of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) is seeking practicum or internship students in the Research & Access Services department. MLIS students interested in information literacy, outreach, reference/research services, access services, and user experience design would gain the most from this unpaid practicum/internship.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: May include but are not limited to:

●  Providing basic reference, research, interlibrary loan and circulation services in person, via email and phone (one service desk)

●  Collaborating to develop lesson plans and leading information literacy sessions

●  Observing and assisting with research services and outreach work such as

pop-up libraries, book displays, studio visits, and research consultations

●  Participating in assessment initiatives such as space usage statistics, etc.

●  Editing and generating new content for digital learning objects, e.g. LibGuides or

Canvas modules

●  Reviewing current tutorials and online resources, giving feedback from a student

perspective on UX design

●  Creating video tutorials using screencasting software, in collaboration with

librarians

●  Developing an understanding of professional development opportunities in our

field
Internship Outcomes, students will:

●  Gain experience in fundamental library and information science principles and competencies as they apply to research, instruction, and outreach services.

●  Recognize the interdisciplinary, service-based and user-focused nature of the profession.

●  Develop evaluative and analytical skills to respond flexibly to future changes and challenges.

●  Create and complete SMART goals, in collaboration with the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are seeking individuals who are currently enrolled in an MLIS program or recently graduated with a final degree in library science.

We expect strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Previous library and/or customer service experience preferred. Knowledge or interest in contemporary art or architecture is preferable. Proficiency with Microsoft + Google Suite products preferred.

NOTE: While the position is unpaid, it can be used for course credit if the candidate’s institution allows it.
