BuzzFeed Inc. is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. We reserve the ability to adjust the final compensation for this role based on the final candidate's experience, skillset, certifications, and geography.

The Role

HuffPost is seeking a sharp, driven Legal/Justice Reporter to join our dynamic news team with a focus on the U.S. federal courts and the Justice Department. This is a full-time position, with a strong preference for candidates in the Washington, D.C. area and a second preference for the New York City area. Exceptional remote candidates will also be considered.

We are looking for a reporter who is passionate about legal and justice issues. This candidate should have either a deep, rich understanding of American federal courts (including their key figures and the legal issues contested within them) and experience writing about them, or should be well-sourced within the U.S. Department of Justice. The role’s time spent between these two institutions will depend on the reporter’s knowledge, sources and skills. This reporter must be able to quickly write clean, lively reported stories about key legal news, and will also be asked to write analytical pieces with sharp angles that clearly and unflinchingly lay out a story’s stakes.

You Will

  • Report on major news within the federal judiciary, including noteworthy circuit court and Supreme Court opinions, as well as high-profile oral arguments and news about influential judges
  • Stay on top of prominent filings involving high-profile federal prosecutions, with an emphasis on political cases
  • Cover the Justice Department as an institution – including potential infighting and political meddling
  • Write a combination of fast-paced news as well as sharp legal analysis
  • Doggedly pursue your beat through a broad lens, including potentially focusing on prominent state-level cases

Part of what makes BuzzFeed a pioneer in digital media is our commitment to exploring new ventures that lead to spreading truth and joy. As such, you may be asked to share your knowledge with your colleagues through presentations or trainings, to screen and interview job candidates, or to take part in recruitment or networking events on behalf of the company and be part of a union.

You Have

  • The ability to develop strong sourcing with the Department of Justice and federal law enforcement
  • Keen understanding of contested aspects of American law
  • The ability to write clearly about how court decisions affect real people
  • The ability to write both time-sensitive breaking news coverage as well as longer-form features and analysis
  • The skills and sources to break news on the beat
