Student Nursing Internship

What exactly is an internship?

👩🏻‍⚕️Great question! The goal of St. John's Paid Summer Nursing Internship is to provide current nursing student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills through out the two week duration. Nursing Students will have the opportunity to directly shadow a Registered Nurse, one on one, for the duration of the internship and explore different nursing units within the hospital. 

 

Internship Dates:

  • Start date: July 8th (All day orientation)
  • End date: July 20th
  • Nurse Extern I and Nurse Extern II opportunities after internship.

Is this internship paid?

👨🏿‍⚕️You bet! HSHS St. John’s Student Nursing Internships is a paid full-time two week internship. If you are selected to participate in the internship you can expect to intern 36-40 hours per week during the duration of the program. The internship is considered temporary employment, you and I can discuss moving into a Nurse Extern role after the completion of the internship if you interested in gaining more paid experience to further your nursing career.

 

What are the dates of the internship?

👩🏿‍⚕️The first day of the summer internship is Monday, July 8th. The internship will run until July 20th, 2024.

 

Sounds great! I want in! What are the requirements?

  • Candidates MUST be enrolled nursing school to be eligible for the internship.
  • Candidates MUST have completed at least one semester of the nursing program by the start date of the internship
  • Candidates MUST be in good academic standing to be eligible for the internship.
  • Candidates will need to provide transcripts for validation.

 

Week 1 and 2: Medical Surgical

  • Cardiovascular Care Unit
  • Intermediate Care Unit
  • 8th Floor (Surg, Neuro, Oncology)
  • General Medical Unit
  • Ortho Surgical Unit

Becoming a Med/Surg nurse at HSHS will help you to build a solid nursing foundation and hone in on your general nursing skills. You will be exposed to a wide variety of patient conditions and populations. Med/Surg nursing allows you to learn invaluable time management skills including how to prioritize patient care effectively and efficiently. Med/Surg provides a great opportunity to help find your nursing niche and determine what specialty areas you may be interested in learning in the future. HSHS Med/Surg units have flexible scheduling options with both day shift and night shift availability as well as opportunities for growth including becoming a preceptor or charge nurse. Friendly and compassionate nurses will work alongside you whether you are a seasoned RN or new to nursing. Join our unit shared governance to get involved and provide suggestions for process improvement that directly impact frontline colleagues as well as plan fun events for your unit. Being a part of Med/Surg nursing at HSHS is a great opportunity for all!

Qualifications

 

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred

 

Experience

1-2 years of healthcare experience is preferred

 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within 30-days of employment

Must be actively working toward certification/licensure in field of practice.
