Finance Intern

About the position

Assist supervisor and other department staff with the city’s day to day finance activities and special projects. Support may be provided in data entry, accounts payable, accounts receivable, utility billing, preparing journal entries, preparing financial reports, audit prep, and/or other areas as needed.


We are interviewing for summer placement, which is full-time from June to August 2024, and fall placement which is part time (30 hours a week) from September to December 2024. Hours are Mon-Fri from 8:00am - 4:30pm.  

 

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with day-to-day finance activities including accounts payable and accounts receivable processing. 
  • Assist with records retention including scanning of documents, evaluation of currently archived data, and organization of data/records.
  • Work with accountants on fixed asset and capital project tracking.
  • Respond to information requests and provide backup in all areas of finance division. 
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare reports, make general ledger entries, and review and verify accuracy of journal entries.
  • Assist with preparation of audit workpapers including ACFR statistical data. 
  • Attend meetings, participate in committees, and represent finance division as needed to other city staff.
  • Complete special projects such as budget award information preparation, presentation materials, utility billing data analysis. 
  • Organize and update process documentations,
  • Perform other duties as directed.

 

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary education in accounting, finance or a related field with a graduation date no later than December 2025. 

 

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated cultural competence and comfort with supporting the city’s strategic objectives for advancing racial equity. 
  • Previous computer software or office experience.
  • Desire or past experience at a governmental entity/non-profit in any position type or volunteering experience.
