Permitting Division Intern - Summer 2024

NATURE OF WORK: The City of Orlando is seeking university students to gain experience and knowledge in the Permitting Division Department.  This opportunity affords students a holistic view of how development is affected and shaped from a governmental perspective through the application of Local and State Regulated Codes such as the Florida Building Codes, NFPA and the City’s Engineering Standard Manual.  These referenced code manuals along with the City’s team of reviewers are critical in ensuring code compliance and its impact on proposed design projects.  The permitting department plays a vital role in the City’s construction process in two phases, which are Plan Review and Inspections.  This opportunity will focus primarily on Plan Review.  Interns will; however, be given the opportunity to shadow the inspection process as well.   Successful completions of those phases are required to allow the issuance of a Certificate of Completion, Certificate of Occupancy or Final.  This often requires extensive collaboration with homeowner(s), contractor(s), developer(s), architect(s), engineer(s) along with our internal departments such as planning and site to name a few.  Collectively this results in a well-designed safe structure to work, play, and live in the City Beautiful.

This is an ideal opportunity for Junior and Senior students to gain firsthand exposure to their specific field of study (i.e., Architecture, Engineering (Structural and/ Civil), Fire, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing) from a compliance review perspective.  The range of work will vary from residential to commercial development projects.   Students will work directly with Plan reviews to understand how projects are reviewed for code compliance as well attend meetings with design professionals, contractors, and homeowners.

Standard office hours will be from 8am to 5pm.  Interns will earn at rate of $15 per hour.

Minimum Requirements

Students with a declared major/minor in Architecture, Construction Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Construction, Structural and/ Civil Engineering are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidate should have strong communication skills and be experienced in Word processors (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
