GIS INTERN - Utility/ I&T

FUNCTION
I&T GIS Internship 
SUMMARY
The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Water Department is seeking a GIS Intern. CLT Water is one of the largest public water and sewer service providers in the Southeast. We value competent, skilled candidates with a service focus to work in a team environment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will assist GIS Analysts, GIS Coordinators and Application Administrators with the development, maintenance, and updating of GIS databases within an ArcSDE enterprise environment.

· Basic cartographic and map making skills required.

· Requires reading and interpretation of preliminary, record, and as-built documentation. Aid in the gathering of system documentation related to customer service. Opportunities for field collection of GIS data will be available.

· The candidate will possess basic working knowledge of ESRI’s ArcPro 2.x desktop software (or equivalent platform) and general GIS principles and concepts.

· The individual should be detail-oriented and possess entry level knowledge of ArcGIS editing tools, and should be familiar with shapefiles, file geodatabases, and  editing in a SDE database.

· Preferably the candidate is familiar with querying GIS data.

· The candidate must have the technical agility, focus, flexibility, enthusiasm, and vision to enhance the Charlotte Water GIS Team.

· The candidate must be able to coordinate, plan, and support simultaneous tasks and GIS projects.

· The candidate must be capable of preparing and delivering reports related to the Utilities GIS data to the immediate supervisor and others; use geospatial data in the creation and production of GIS maps and data; and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

· Data entry and quality control of new and existing datasets will be a function of this role to ensure data integrity.

· The candidate will be expected to read and interpret preliminary record and as-built documentation.

· The position will require gathering of system documentation related to customer service.

· Field collection of GIS data using Trimble survey equipment may be required, frequency of field work may vary depending on other workloads.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
• Completion of at least two years of study in Geography, Earth Science, Engineering, or related field
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in Geography, Earth Science, Engineering, or related field or enrolled in a graduate
• Experience using ArcGIS Pro 2.x (or equivalent GIS platform) or later suite of products with some knowledge of importing, editing, exporting, and creating data. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
